Something Safe

633 Words
The first date didn't feel like a risk and maybe, that was the problem. Courtney stood in front of her mirror longer than she expected not because she didn't know what to wear but because she wasn't used to this anymore, not like this, not simple. "You're overthinking," Lia said from the doorway, arms crossed with a knowing smile. "I'm not," Courtney replied, adjusting her sleeve for the third time. "You've changed outfits twice." "I just want to be comfortable." "You are comfortable," Lia said. "That's why you're confused." Courtney paused because that felt accurate, comfort, no pressure, no fear, no emotional weight sitting in her chest. It should've been easy. So why did it feel unfamiliar? "You like him," Lia added gently. Courtney nodded. "I do." "And?" A pause then, "It's different," she admitted. Lia smiled softly. "Different isn't bad." "I know." Courtney looked at her reflection one more time then grabbed her bag. "Okay," she said. "I'm going." The restaurant wasn't fancy not quiet either just… warm. The kind of place people go to relax, not impress. Daniel was already there. Of course he was. "Hey," he said, standing up with that same easy smile. "You're early," Courtney said. "I like being on time." "That's rare." "I'm full of surprises." She smiled and it came naturally. Dinner started easily. Conversation flowed without effort, no awkward pauses, no second-guessing. "You've always owned the café?" Daniel asked. Courtney nodded. "For a few years now." "That's impressive." She shrugged lightly. "It wasn't easy." "I didn't think it would be," he said. "Things that matter usually aren't." That made her pause because those words, they felt familiar but this time, they didn't carry the same weight. "So why coffee?" he asked. Courtney smiled faintly. "Because it's simple." Daniel tilted his head. "Coffee isn't simple." "It is," she insisted. "People make it complicated." He laughed softly. "That sounds like experience." "It is." A quiet moment passed but it wasn't uncomfortable just… calm. "You don't ask a lot of questions," Courtney noted. "I ask the ones that matter." "And the rest?" "I let people tell me when they're ready." That was new. Courtney leaned back slightly, studying him. "You're very patient." "I've learned to be." She nodded slowly and for the first time, she realized something. He wasn't trying to figure her out. He wasn't trying to fix anything. He wasn't trying to rush something forward. He was just… there, present. "You're different," she said. Daniel smiled. "Good different?" "Yeah." A pause then she added, "Safe different." That word lingered between them. Daniel didn't look offended, didn't look unsure. He just nodded. "I'll take that." Courtney expected something more, a reaction, a question but he didn't push it and that made her chest feel lighter. After dinner, they walked outside. The night air was cool, quiet. "So," Daniel said, hands in his pockets, "was that okay?" Courtney let out a small laugh. "It was more than okay." "Good." A pause. "Do you want to do it again?" he asked, simple, direct, no pressure. Courtney looked at him, really looked and for once, there was no confusion, no emotional pull in different directions just a choice. "Yes," she said. Daniel smiled and it reached his eyes. "Good," he repeated. They stood there for a moment longer not rushing to leave, not forcing anything else. "I'll see you tomorrow?" he asked. Courtney nodded. "Yeah." And just like that, the night ended, no chaos, no uncertainty, no lingering questions just… something steady. But as Courtney walked away, her steps slowed slightly because deep down, there was something she couldn't ignore. It was good, it was easy, it was safe but it didn't feel like the kind of thing that breaks you and maybe, that was exactly why it scared her.
