So, it all boils down to this. Denise thinks her mother hates her, because she isn’t cut out to be Superwoman or a Rhodes freaking scholar. Mindy has a horrible problem of her own that she confided to Denise. Meanwhile, Mindy wants to take Denise’s place in the school pecking order, thinking it will solve her problems or at least make them less awful. As a result, Denise knows her so-called friends have agendas of their own and use their friendship to feel better about themselves. Denise has been afraid to reveal her secret problems, fearing that she’ll lose everyone’s respect. She relies on that respect, since she gets so little respect at home. She also feels like she can’t trust anyone.
