CHAPTER 5 — The Place Between Shadows
Maya woke in darkness.
Not normal darkness.
Not night.
This darkness felt thick.
Heavy.
Alive.
She could not see her hands.
She could not feel the ground.
She wasn’t lying down.
She wasn’t standing.
It felt like she was floating in nothing.
Her breath came out small and scared.
“Hello?” she whispered.
Her voice didn’t echo.
It didn’t bounce back.
It just… vanished.
Like the darkness swallowed it.
Panic stabbed her chest.
She hugged herself, even though she could barely feel her own body.
“Lucian?” she whispered.
No answer.
Then—
A sound.
A soft hum.
Low. Cold.
Like metal shaking far away.
Maya turned her head.
She didn’t even know if she really had one.
The hum grew louder.
Closer.
Her skin tingled.
“What is this place?” she whispered.
The darkness moved.
It shifted like smoke.
It breathed like something alive.
Shapes floated around her.
Dark shapes.
Ink shapes.
One shape slid toward her.
Slow.
Silent.
It didn’t look human.
It didn’t look like an animal.
It looked like a shadow pretending to be a body.
Maya tried to step back.
If stepping was even possible here.
“What do you want?” she whispered.
The shape said nothing.
It stretched something like an arm toward her.
Cold wrapped around her.
Like icy fingers.
Maya’s heart raced.
“Let me go,” she said.
The shadow leaned closer.
Then—
A voice.
Not from the shadow.
Not from anywhere around her.
Inside her head.
“You do not belong here.”
Maya froze.
“Who said that?” she whispered.
The darkness vibrated.
“You do not belong here,” the voice said again.
Calm. Slow.
Old. Very old.
Maya shook her head fast.
“I didn’t choose this! Someone dragged me in! I want to go back!”
The voice stayed calm.
“Few return from the Place Between Shadows.”
Her stomach twisted.
“The… what?” she asked.
“The Place Between Shadows,” the voice said.
“Where lost bonds, broken magic, and dying worlds sink.”
Her throat tightened.
“I’m not dying,” she said.
“Not yet.”
Cold ran down her back.
She tried to move away.
Her foot touched something at last.
Ground.
Soft.
Cold.
Like solid fog.
She took a tiny step.
The darkness shifted again.
The shadow shape drifted closer.
“No,” she whispered. “Stay away.”
It didn’t stop.
It reached again.
Maya’s chest thudded hard.
“STOP!”
Light blasted from her hands.
Bright.
White.
Blinding.
The darkness screamed.
The shadow flew back like something had punched it.
Maya blinked fast.
The light faded.
She stared at her glowing hands.
Soft silver light lived under her skin.
“What… what is this?” she whispered.
The voice spoke again.
“Your bond is waking.”
“What bond?” she said.
“I don’t have one.”
Silence.
Then—
“You do.”
Maya shook her head.
“No. Lucian rejected me. The elders said—”
“The elders are blind. The bond is not broken. It has never been broken.”
Her breath caught.
“That’s not possible.”
“It is truth. And truth has a price.”
More shadows gathered.
Circling her.
Watching her.
She stepped back until she hit something solid.
A wall?
A door?
She didn’t know.
The voice continued:
“Your bond pulled you here. His bond tried to stop it.”
“Lucian tried to save me,” Maya whispered.
“He tried. He failed. And now the bond cracks.”
“What does that mean?” she cried.
The voice went quiet.
The shadows opened.
Someone stepped out.
A man.
Tall.
Thin.
Sharp.
Wrapped in shadows.
His face was pale.
His eyes glowed silver.
Maya’s breath broke.
He smiled a slow, hungry smile.
“You,” he said softly, “are not supposed to be here.”
She hit the wall behind her.
Hard.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
“My name…” He paused.
Smiling.
“Does not matter. Not yet.”
She swallowed.
“What do you want?”
He tilted his head slowly.
Like a predator.
“You,” he said.
Her chest hurt.
“You belong to two worlds,” he whispered.
“His world. And mine.”
“I don’t belong to you,” Maya said.
He smiled wider.
“That is what makes you interesting.”
He reached out his hand.
Long fingers.
Too long.
Maya jerked away.
“Don’t touch me.”
He stopped.
Very close.
Cold air came off his skin.
“The light you used,” he said softly.
“How did you learn it?”
“I didn’t,” she said.
“It just happened!”
He leaned closer.
“Then you are stronger than I thought.”
Maya looked around.
Her hands shook.
Her breath shook.
“Let me go. Please,” she begged.
He laughed.
“No.”
Shadows twisted around him.
“You were pulled into the rift between your worlds,” he said.
“Your body is here. Your bond is here. But your spirit…”
He touched her forehead.
“…is drifting.”
Maya flinched.
“Stop!”
He lowered his hand.
“You are unstable,” he said.
“You may break.”
“I won’t break!”
His smile was soft and cruel.
“We shall see.”
He snapped his fingers.
Shadows wrapped around Maya like ropes.
She cried out.
“LET ME GO!”
The ropes pulled her forward.
“No! Stop!”
The pale man watched calmly.
“You will come with me,” he said.
“You must learn why your bond refuses to die.”
Darkness swallowed her.
But this time she fell.
Fast.
Faster.
Too fast.
Wind howled around her.
She hit the ground hard.
Pain shot through her knees and arms.
She pushed herself up.
The place had changed.
A forest.
Silver sky.
Glowing leaves.
Cold air.
“What is this?” Maya whispered.
The pale man stood behind her.
“This,” he said, “is the Edge of Hours.”
“That means nothing to me.”
“It will.”
A rustle behind her.
Maya spun.
Two yellow eyes shone in the trees.
A deep, slow growl rolled out.
Maya stepped back.
“What is that?”
“A guardian,” the man said.
“Here to test you.”
The creature stepped forward.
Huge.
Black.
Smoke-like fur.
Sharp teeth.
Burning eyes.
It snarled.
Maya shook with fear.
“I can’t fight that.”
“You must,” the man said.
“I’ll die!”
“Maybe.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“This is cruel.”
“This is truth.”
The beast crept closer.
Slow.
Ready to kill.
Maya hit a tree.
She could not breathe.
“Please,” she whispered.
“Don’t.”
The man said nothing.
The creature lunged.
Maya screamed.
She dove aside.
Claws ripped the tree behind her.
She scrambled up.
She ran fast.
Branches cut her arms.
Roots tripped her feet.
Her lungs burned.
The growling came closer.
She fell.
Pain shot through her knee.
She turned.
The creature jumped.
“NO!”
Light burst from her chest.
Boom.
A shockwave blasted out.
The creature flew back into a tree.
The trunk cracked.
The pale man appeared beside her.
“Interesting,” he said.
Maya gasped.
“What was that?”
“The bond,” he said.
“Your bond with him.”
“No,” she whispered.
“Lucian rejected me.”
“Rejection is not destruction,” the man said.
“It only makes destiny slower.”
“That makes no sense!”
“It will.”
He stepped toward her.
She crawled away.
Too slow.
He grabbed her chin gently.
Too gently.
“You don’t understand,” he said.
“You and Lucian are not an accident.”
Maya froze.
“What do you mean?”
“You were made for a purpose.”
“What purpose?”
His silver eyes glowed.
“You are the key between worlds.”
Her chest tightened.
“What worlds?”
He didn’t answer.
He snapped his fingers.
The forest twisted.
The ground split.
Maya fell again.
She screamed as colors swirled.
Then—
A stone room.
Cold.
Blue flames.
Chains on walls.
A glowing symbol on the floor.
“No,” she whispered.
“What is this place?”
The man stepped behind her.
“This,” he said softly, “is where your truth begins.”
“I want to go home,” Maya cried.
“I want Lucian.”
The man smiled.
“You will see him.”
Hope filled her chest.
“When?” she whispered.
“When he comes for you.”
Her heart jumped.
“He’s… he’s looking for me?”
“Oh yes,” the man said.
“He is tearing his world apart for you.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Lucian…”
The man leaned close.
“And when he arrives,” he whispered,
“you will destroy him.”
Maya shook her head wildly.
“No! Never!”
“You will,” he said.
“You cannot stop it.”
“Why!?”
His voice turned cold.
“Because that is why you were made.”
The floor cracked.
Red magic burst upward.
Fire.
Heat.
Power.
It wrapped around her.
She screamed.
Her body shook.
The man watched calmly.
“The bond must break,” he said.
“For your world to fall.”
“No!” Maya cried.
“I won’t hurt him!”
Her vision blurred.
Everything burned.
She reached out.
“Lucian—!”
The light exploded.
White.
Bright.
Blinding.
Everything disappeared.
