Prologue

The city never slept. Neon lights flickered across rain-slicked streets, casting disorted reflections onto the puddles that pooled along the cracked asphalt. Sirents wailed in the distance, horns blared, and the occasional shout punctuated the constant hum of traffic and nightlife. Rain fell lightly, a persistent drizzle that made everything glisten, and the damp air smelled of wet concrete, gasoline, and something darker---fear. She walked through it, heels clicking softly against the wet pavement, echoing in rhythm with her racing heartbeat. Her coat, thin and barely sheilding her from the chill, was wrapped tightly around her frame. Her hands clutched her phone like a lifeline, her gaze focused straight ahead as though the familar streets would protect her. She had no idea that danger had already found her. From the shadows, he watched. Seated in a black SUV, engined idling silently, he never took his eyes off her. She was fragile perfection in the chaos of the city, each movement, every breath cataloged and memorized. He was a predator by nature, a man who commanded obedience and inspird fear, yet for her, a trange tenderness coiled in his chest. It had begun weeks ago, in a crowded club pulsing with music and smoke. She had laughed, luminous, and ungaurded, cutting through the dim haze. At first, it had been curiosity---an idle flicker of interest--but that curiosity evolved into something darker, more dangoerus. She haunted his thoughts, an obsession that tiwsted his nights into restless calculations and endless scrutiny. He was careful. Obsession required patience. He did not apprach her--not yet. Desire was simple, fleeting. Obsession was an art, and he was a master at crafting it, drawing it out, letting it simmer until it consumed everything.
