Chapter 5

655 Words
An avalanche of pain crashed through her chest. Elara bit down on her lower lip until the metallic taste of blood flooded her mouth. She opened her eyes and glared at Vivienne. "Stealing my man... You are just like... your mom..." Vivienne's smirk froze on her face. No one knew how deeply she envied Elara. Whenever they stood together, every eye always drifted to Elara. Vivienne was nothing more than Elara's shadow. Even after being cast out, Elara had still managed to end up with a man like Sebastian. How could Vivienne not burn with hatred? She shot Elara a venomous look. "Look at you, half-dead and still acting tough. We'll see who gets the last laugh." With that, she stormed off, her heels striking the floor in sharp, angry beats. Silence settled over the ward again, broken only by Elara's ragged, pain-filled breaths. In the stillness of the night, wave after wave of agony tore her out of unconsciousness again and again. The pain pump had stopped working, and her hospital gown clung to her body, drenched in cold sweat. Shaking, she fumbled for the call button. She pressed it once. Nothing. Twice. The hallway remained eerily quiet. The pain gave her no room to wait. Gritting her teeth, Elara forced herself toward the nurses' station. The nurses kept chatting, completely unaware of her presence. "The car accident patient from this afternoon? Wasn't her pain pump turned off? She just called." "Mr. Blackwood gave the order. Said she needed to learn the hard way." "But she's severely injured..." "Keep your voice down. Are you really questioning the Blackwood family? She must've offended them. That's not our problem." Elara stood there without moving for a moment before turning around. There was no point in asking for help. To please his fiancée and comfort his son, Sebastian could cast aside the wife he had once adored without a second thought. Slowly, she pressed a hand to the hollow place in her chest where her heart should have been. She'd expected unbearable pain. Oddly enough, it barely hurt anymore. No, her heart hadn't simply gone numb. It had stopped beating altogether. Her body was still breathing, but her soul had already withered away. With the pain pump disconnected, Elara remained trapped in relentless agony. Within days, her condition took a sharp turn for the worse. Only after she was rushed to the emergency room again did Sebastian finally give in. Once the pain medication was restored, she slept through the night. When she woke, he was standing beside her bed. Sebastian had finally decided to show up. His brows drew together as he looked at the gaunt, hollow-cheeked Elara. "It's only been a few days. How did you end up like this? If word gets out, people will think the Blackwood family is trying to avoid responsibility, like we're refusing to treat you." Elara felt nothing but bitter irony. She glanced at the pain pump and spoke in a halting voice. "Don't know... who stopped... the pain meds." Sebastian's eyes flickered for a moment, and his tone remained as indifferent as ever. "They're busy. Stop making trouble." A weak, exhausted smile touched her lips. Back when they were still in love, Sebastian had once reduced a new nurse to tears because she missed Elara's vein twice. When Lucas was born, his eyes had turned red with distress, his voice trembling as he said, "Elara, we're never having another child. I can't stand watching you suffer like that again." He had kept his word. He even got a vasectomy. Sebastian's devotion to Elara had once been the envy of every woman in high society. People said Elara was unbelievably lucky to be loved so deeply by Sebastian. Even during the years she was missing, he never stopped searching for her. And now she had come back. Only for him to give all of that devotion to someone else.
