CHAPTER SEVEN:WHEN THE HEART CHOOSES

1580 Words
CHAPTER SEVEN — When the Heart Chooses It had been three weeks since that café night. Jayden and Ella had fallen back into their usual rhythm — almost. They laughed again. Filmed again. Texted again. But something had changed. There was a new silence between them sometimes — not angry, just heavy. Like both of them were holding something they were scared to say. MORNING — THE SHOOT Ella was at the studio early, setting up lights for a new video: “Love vs. Attachment — Knowing the Difference.” Jayden walked in holding a paper bag of her favorite pastries. “Breakfast for the philosopher of love,” he said, smiling. She smiled too, but her heart did a weird flip. “You’re learning fast, Camera Boy.” “Only from the best,” he said, pretending to bow. They worked side by side — adjusting the tripod, setting up the microphone, laughing about their last blooper reel. Jayden kept glancing at her, noticing little things — how her hair caught the light, how she bit her lip when she focused, how she still looked beautiful even when she was annoyed. He’d fallen for her — hard. But he hadn’t said it. Not yet. He was waiting for the right time. THE FILMING “Hi guys!” Ella began. “Welcome back to another episode of Love Lessons with Ella! Today’s topic is one of my favorites—” Jayden’s voice came from behind the camera. “Don’t say ‘attachment.’ It sounds too serious.” She smirked. “Oh really? What should I say then?” He grinned. “Say, ‘How to know when it’s real or when you’re just obsessed.’” She laughed. “Fine. You win.” The recording started. As she talked, her eyes kept drifting toward Jayden. Every time he smiled, she lost her train of thought. Halfway through, she stopped talking and sighed. “You’re distracting me.” He raised a brow. “How?” “By existing,” she said. The room went quiet. For a moment, even she realized what she had just said. Jayden’s mouth curved into a slow smile. “That’s probably the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.” She threw a cushion at him. “Shut up.” He laughed, catching it easily. “I’m not kidding though. You really mean that?” Ella turned away, cheeks burning. “Let’s just continue filming.” Jayden smiled softly, but his heart was racing. Something was changing between them — something real. LATER THAT DAY Rain started falling, soft at first, then heavy. They packed up after filming, waiting it out. Jayden sat near the window, watching raindrops race each other down the glass. Ella joined him, holding two mugs of tea. “Here,” she said, handing one to him. “Thanks,” he said, taking a sip. “This is nice.” They sat quietly, listening to the rain. Then Ella asked, “Do you ever think about… what love really means?” Jayden smiled a little. “All the time.” “And what’s your answer?” He thought for a moment. “It’s when someone feels like home — even when everything else is chaos.” She blinked, touched. “That’s deep.” He looked at her. “You asked.” Ella looked away quickly, heart pounding. He always said things like that — simple but heavy. She whispered, “Sometimes I wish I didn’t fall for people so easily.” Jayden’s eyes widened slightly. “You fell?” She froze. “Oh— I didn’t mean—” He leaned closer, voice low. “You fell for who?” She stood up suddenly, flustered. “Forget it.” Jayden followed her. “Ella.” “Jayden, don’t,” she said, shaking her head. “This is crazy. We work together, remember?” “I don’t care,” he said quietly. She looked at him, her heart beating too fast. “Jayden…” He stepped closer, eyes soft but steady. “I’ve liked you since the day I fixed your camera. You don’t have to say it back. I just need you to know.” Before she could reply, her phone buzzed on the table. The name flashing across the screen froze her completely. Vanessa. THE EX RETURNS Jayden saw it too. His face changed instantly — shock, confusion, then anger. “Why is she calling you?” he asked. “I don’t know,” Ella said quickly, picking it up. “She doesn’t even know you,” he said. Ella hesitated, then answered. “Hello?” A soft, pretty voice came through the speaker. “Hi, Ella. I’m Vanessa — Jayden’s ex.” Ella’s stomach flipped. “Uh—hi.” “I know it’s weird,” Vanessa continued sweetly, “but I saw your videos. You two look… close. I just wanted to say, be careful. Jayden’s sweet, but he doesn’t stay.” Jayden’s face went red. “What the hell—” Ella quickly hung up. For a moment, silence. Just the rain and their breathing. Jayden ran a hand through his hair, pacing. “I swear, she’s lying. She’s just jealous.” “Why would she even have my number?” Ella asked quietly. “I don’t know!” he said, frustrated. “Maybe she saw it on your page, or maybe she still stalks me. I haven’t talked to her in months!” Ella crossed her arms. “Then why did it sound like she knew everything about us?” “Because she watches everything,” Jayden snapped. “She can’t stand the idea of me being happy without her.” Ella looked down, hurt written all over her face. “Jayden… I just don’t want to be a chapter in someone else’s story.” He stopped. His expression softened. He walked closer, voice quiet now. “You’re not. You’re the story.” She looked up at him, eyes wet. “Then prove it.” THE BREAK But he didn’t know how to prove it. Not that day. Not while she still looked at him like she didn’t know whether to trust him or run. So he said nothing. And she walked away. WEEKS LATER They stopped filming together for a while. Ella worked alone, recording short videos with forced smiles. Her followers noticed. “Where’s Jayden?” “The vibe is gone ” “We miss the duo!!” She missed him too — terribly. But pride is a heavy thing. Every time she almost texted, she remembered Vanessa’s voice saying, “He doesn’t stay.” MEANWHILE — JAYDEN He threw himself into work too — shooting ads, editing late nights, pretending he was fine. But every time his camera flashed, he saw her face. Every quiet night, he replayed her last words: Then prove it. He knew what he had to do. THE PUBLIC CONFESSION A month later, Ella got a notification. Jayden had posted a video. It wasn’t an ad. It wasn’t a travel vlog. It was titled: “For the Love Coach.” She clicked it. Jayden stood in front of the same studio they used to film in. His voice was shaky but honest. “Hi, Ella. You once said love needs sense — that people should learn before they fall. Maybe that’s true. But I think love also needs courage — the kind that lets you risk being seen, even when you might get hurt. You wanted me to prove it. So here it is. I’m not running this time. I choose you. Even if you don’t choose me back.” Ella covered her mouth, tears rolling silently. She didn’t even realize she was crying until she saw the last frame — a photo of her, laughing behind the camera, with the caption: “My favorite view.” THE CHOICE She didn’t even think. She grabbed her coat, ran out of her apartment, and headed straight to the studio. When she got there, he was packing up equipment. He turned when he heard her footsteps. “Ella?” She walked straight up to him. “You i***t,” she whispered. “You could’ve just called.” He smiled sadly. “Would you have answered?” She hesitated — then smiled through her tears. “Probably not.” Jayden chuckled, shaking his head. “Then I made the right choice.” For a second, they just stared — two people tired of pretending not to care. Then she said softly, “You win, Camera Boy.” He frowned playfully. “Win what?” “My heart,” she whispered. Jayden froze — then grinned like a kid. He stepped forward, cupped her face gently, and kissed her. The kind of kiss that tasted like rain, tears, and second chances. THAT NIGHT Later, they sat together on the studio floor, lights dim, music soft. Ella rested her head on his shoulder. “Jayden,” she murmured. “What’s that?” She smiled faintly. “I finally understand something.” “What?” “Love isn’t about who stays the longest. It’s about who refuses to leave when it’s hardest.” He kissed her hair. “Then I’m never leaving.” She looked up at him, eyes shining. “Promise?” “Promise.” Outside, the rain started again — soft, steady, peaceful. But this time, it didn’t sound sad. It sounded like a beginning.
