Campbell knew all the dogs had enjoyed the creeks and ponds around his home. He had hoped Sergeant would eagerly leap into the ocean and take a little swim to work off his excess energy. He was quickly disappointed. The dog only gazed up at him with his yellow-gold eyes gleaming with questioning curiosity. “No, I'm not nuts,” Campbell muttered. “Jump in. Take a few laps around the pool.” Sergeant ignored him, and turned about as if deciding he had more territory to be explored and marked. Campbell didn't push his luck. He dutifully followed the dog around. Penelope appeared carrying her stenchy waste load with a cringed-nosed expression of disgust. She quickly heaved her sloppy mess as far as she dared into the awaiting waves. Sergeant showed only mild interest in Penelope's activities
