The dogs quickly spread out to the right along the soft muddy banks of the darkly reflecting pond. Amber abruptly came to a rigid halt when she picked up a new trail. She raised her wet muddy nose to sniff the stuffy air with peaked ears and sharp, gazing eyes. Suddenly she bounded into the dense trees in hot pursuit of her prey. The other three dogs charged after her with wild excitement and no caution. “Wait!” Campbell yelled, fearing for the dogs' safety. They didn't heed his command, and disappeared into the thick undergrowth. “Damn, now what?” Campbell muttered. He anxiously raced after the dogs with Penelope close behind. Campbell immediately had trouble keeping the dogs in sight through the darkness and thick foliage. He could barely see the white plums of the dogs' furry tails
