The days that followed the Spiritfall Reckoning were quiet in Eldenridge—but it was the kind of silence that buzzed beneath the surface, waiting to break. Elira could feel it every time she passed through the school halls, her senses sharpened by her growing connection to the Essence. Her bond with Aiden had deepened, but so had the danger surrounding them.
The corruption wasn’t gone. It had only shifted.
Rhea’s fall had created a void—and something else was crawling out to fill it.
---
It began with fire.
A series of blazes erupted around town. Old trees near the Wyrdstone shop ignited without warning. A car exploded in the faculty parking lot. And late one night, Elira’s room lit up with a blinding orange glow as the woods behind her house caught fire.
Elira stood at the edge of the flame line, panting. Her fingers glowed as she summoned waves of Essence to control the spread. Naru leapt through the blaze, his fur haloed with blue light as he redirected currents of energy.
Someone was attacking.
And they were using elemental corruption.
---
The next day, Elira and Aiden met with Naru in the ruins of the shrine.
“There’s a new player,” Naru said grimly. “One who seeks to awaken the Ember Seal.”
“The third Seal?” Elira asked. “Where is it?”
“Beneath the mountain,” Naru replied. “In the mines of Ironsreach. It hasn’t been touched in a century. But now… the flames rise again.”
“Then we go,” Aiden said, eyes flaring.
Naru hesitated. “You won’t go alone.”
Out of the shadows stepped a figure—tall, cloaked in ash-colored robes, and with flame-shaped tattoos crawling up her arms.
“This is Kaelin,” Naru introduced. “A Spiritbound of Ember. She will guide you.”
Kaelin’s voice was low and smoky. “If you seek to claim the Seal before it corrupts, you must form a pact.”
“A pact?” Elira asked.
“An Ember Pact,” Kaelin explained. “The forging of your Essence with flame. Dangerous. Painful. But necessary.”
---
The journey to Ironsreach took two days. The air grew thicker the closer they got. Aiden’s fire magic responded to the heat, flaring with minimal control. Elira had to stabilize the aura around them more than once to keep it from erupting.
When they finally reached the mountain’s mouth, the old mining tunnels yawned open before them like a beast’s jaw. Inside, the walls pulsed with red veins of energy.
“Corruption runs deep here,” Kaelin said. “We must move quickly.”
They entered the mines.
---
Inside, time warped.
Heat shimmered like hallucinations. Shadows twisted into shapes that whispered secrets and lies. Elira could feel the Seal’s pull like a magnet, dragging her deeper into the heart of the mountain.
But they weren’t alone.
A figure emerged from the fire—a boy no older than Elira, his eyes glowing with molten gold.
“I am Mael,” he said. “Heir of Cinders. Wielder of the Ash Blade.”
Kaelin’s breath caught. “He was lost… in the Emberfall War.”
“I was reborn,” Mael said. “The Ember Seal chose me. Now I will tear the Veil asunder and remake the world in fire.”
He struck.
Flames poured through the tunnel. Aiden rose to meet it, his own fire surging in response. Elira summoned radiant shields while Kaelin weaved fireproof runes into the walls.
But Mael was too powerful.
“You cannot win,” he roared. “The Ember Pact belongs to me!”
Elira stepped forward, pendant blazing with purified energy.
“No,” she said. “It belongs to all who carry the burden of balance.”
She raised her hands and channeled the Pact.
The Seal pulsed in answer.
Elira screamed as fire met light. Pain seared through her—but also understanding. She saw Mael’s past: a child burned in a battle he didn’t start, twisted by the promise of vengeance.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
And she let the light take him.
Mael vanished into the Seal’s core. The flames died. The mountain exhaled.
---
When Elira opened her eyes, she was lying in Aiden’s lap. Kaelin stood beside them, arms folded.
“You survived,” Kaelin said. “The Pact is forged.”
“What happens now?” Elira asked.
“Two Seals remain,” Naru said, appearing with eyes like starlight. “But your light is changing. You carry more than just Spiritbound blood.”
Aiden took her hand. “You carry hope.”
And deep beneath them, in the mountain’s heart, the Ember Seal pulsed with calm.
