Chapter 22

(Andy) "It won't be normal with me, I promise you that. I can show you if you like." My jaw dropped open and a piece of my apple fell out. I quickly caught it, stupidly shoved it back into my mouth and choked on it. As I coughed, Magnus jumped up and started tapping my back, trying to get me right again and I began to feel myself die of shame. Did he seriously just see me do that…. "Breathe, Andy, breathe," he said, chuckling and he chucked me his water bottle. Downing a few mouthfuls, I began to breathe normally again and gave it back to him. "Feeling better?" "Yeah, after you tried to kill me!" I accused. "Kill you? No, sweetheart, just kiss you," he smirked. I narrowed my eyes at him, trying not to c***k under his gaze and to prove it didn't affect me. What was it with people wanting to kiss me today? Was I wearing a massive sign that I didn't know about? Well...seeing as we will be going to the Archivio for a month or so, maybe we could give this a go.  Whatever this was. We would have time to get to know eachother and also Yann will be around him too. He did say he would accommodate us and take us around. Before I could convince myself further, I stopped.  He is just being a flirt, I told myself.  I'm sure he's like this to all the beautiful women back home. I don't have the time or energy to get my hopes up with all the stuff going on at the moment anyway…  He must have seen my change in mood, because his brow began to furrow as he watched me. As he opened his mouth to speak, he was interrupted by a loud bang that rang throughout the air. We immediately stood to our feet and craned our necks to see what the commotion was. It seemed to be coming from the direction of the South gate and as we took a few steps out from under the tree, gunshots sounded. Magnus quickly grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him as he took a defensive stance and began barking out orders in his Lycan tongue to his nearby men.  A few of them began sprinting towards the gate as we stood there and he turned to face me. "Andy, you need to get inside. Now. I will come find you when this is over," he said hurriedly, looking over his shoulder. Damon and Calli had now run out and were by our side in seconds. "What the hell is going on??" Calli's hand was on my shoulder, trying to boost herself up so she could see. "I don't know? But I don't like the sound of it. We need to go help. Do we have any guns or weapons in the vicinity? My Naginata is at home." "I can get us some. Wait here." Calli sprinted in the direction of the medical school and I turned to the men.  Magnus was quiet and his eyes looked glazed over and they were flickering from his usual hazel to his Lycan's gold. I looked at him questionly but Damon put a finger to his lips so as not to disturb him. His eyes came right and they immediately widened. "Vargul. They are inside," he growled loudly. "What!? They are inside?" Just then, another crash came from the gate and the one sound I never wished to hear was now filling every ear throughout Tectum. The breach siren. My eyes met his and for a split second, the world stopped. His eyes looked at me questioningly before realisation sunk into his worried features. If we survive this, I am going to get that kiss. I said my goodbye to him through our eyes and before the second was up, I was sprinting down the path in the direction of the school with Magnus shouting after me. I ran as fast as I had ever run in my life and as I reached Yann's classroom, loud growls and endless gunfire was filling the air. The younger children were screaming as the teachers were frantically trying to quiet them as well as hustle to the shelter around the back. Looking around, he was nowhere in sight. "Amanda! AMANDA! Where is Yann!?" The poor woman was shaking as two toddlers were crying on either of her hips and she frantically looked around. "I think the bathroom? I'm...I'm sorry Andy, I have to get these kids down there," she sobbed and she led the screaming children out the door. My heart was hammering in my chest and panic was beginning to take over.  I saw a metal bat against the wall by the door so I quickly grabbed it and ran outside to find the toilets. "Yann!! Yann!!," I called, trying to breathe through the shaking in my chest. Down in the depths of my soul, I felt a familiar gnawing trying to crawl its way to the top. If I don't find my boy soon, I am going to lose this battle…. The growls and guns were coming closer and closer and I began screaming his name. I skidded around a corner and Yann was flat against the wall peering out the other side, shaking. I ran forward and quickly grabbed him, which gave him a big fright.  "Mom!! Oh, mom, mom!," and he began sobbing in my arms. "I tried to get back to my classroom but I saw a Vargul and I got scared!," he cried. "It's okay, I'm here now! You're safe with me. Now let's go to the shelter, quickly!" We ran to the back where the second shelter was but as it came into view, the door was pulled shut and locked. We sprinted back to the first one and that was also shut. Once they were locked, we were taught they were not to be unlocked until the safe-siren rang out.  Not for anyone. I glanced around quickly and from the sound of things, the fight was right next to us. I grabbed Yann, and pressed us against the wall, nice and low and held a finger to my lips before I peered out. There were roughly twenty Vargul in the street with more pouring in through the breached gate. The Militia and the Archivio were doing their best but we were being pushed back. Luckily the Vargul were too engaged with them to be running through to the shelters and homes. Looking from my boy and to the scene before us, panic was beginning to rise up in me. What if they see us?  What if we don't make it to some place safe? What if they get to Yann? After that last thought, I gripped the bat tighter. Over my dead body. Our home was not an option and our best bet was the Medical school. There were many rooms and closets I could hide him in and I'm sure we could find more weapons too. Looking up, the once sunny skies were darkening with angry storm clouds and a cold wind began whipping around us. Turning to Yann, I leaned down to whisper to him. "Okay Yann. This is where I need you to be alert and focused. We are going to make a run for my school. I cannot carry you because I need my arms free. Stay close. Stay quiet. And if I say run, you run as fast as you can to the building. Find a closet and lock yourself in. You got it?" His terrified face tore a hole in my heart as he nodded his head. A tear escaped my eye and I quickly kissed his face fiercely before I grabbed his hand and stood. Blood and screams were ringing through my ears and I said a silent prayer to whoever was listening and peered out. Our people had a solid position but many were in amongst the Vargul. I saw a few of our old Alpha squad too with their weapons fighting furiously for their home and children. Watching them, I heard the low dark rumblings of thunder above us. We had an opening so I gripped his hand tighter and raced to the rear of the battlefield. We darted and dodged through the scene before us and I could see a few Lycan fighting alongside us. That was surprising as Lycans try to avoid shifting because close combat with the Vargul means higher chances of transfer of the virus. We were about halfway there when I spotted Calliope struggling to keep back two Vargul. She was wielding a long, sharp machete aimed at the beasts to keep them back while she stood in front of a young woman. Blood was flowing from a long gash in her leg and there was noone close enough to help her. For a second, my mind went blank.  Do I take my boy to safety? Or do I help my sister?
