CHAPTER TWENTY Remi looked anxiously out the window as distant plumes of smoke smudged the brilliant sky. The shelling seemed closer, and much as she’d like to deny it, the road was definitely veering toward the fighting. It looked like the government was trying to take the highway to Djibouti, just like Lucas had feared. The Jeep escorting them pulled back to come alongside Lucas’s window. The soldier in the passenger’s seat was shouting into a radio. The female soldier Remi had befriended back on the border, still standing and holding onto the heavy machine g*n bolted to the back of the Jeep, shouted something to Lucas. There was no giggling or smiles now. She was all business. She looked twenty years older. The soldier and Lucas traded a few words before the Jeep pulled ahead again.
