Ⅰ. What is Girl Power
Girl power refers to the self-actualization of the female lead character. In the TV series, movie, or novel, girl power revolves around the growth and development of the lead female.
In Girl Power novels, the female lead is the most important role. The female lead is the heart of the story and all the other characters are created to support her. The female lead may be in different age groups. She may be a teenager; a young graduate who just entered society; a mature and attractive female CEO; or a strong single mother. Regardless of the female lead’s age, the reader can see her character and spirit grow through her experiences in the story.
Ⅱ. Girl Power novel features
(1) The entire story is centered from the perspective of the female lead. Her role is not dependent on another character. She is the heart of the story and embodies the spirit of independence.
(2) The story relates the experiences of a girl as she grows and the uniqueness of her character. It reflects the female lead’s independence and growth through adversities. The entire story focuses on the growth of the female lead.
(3) All the achievements and glories of the female lead are due to her hard work and talents. They are not achieved due to someone else’s or the male lead’s influence or help.
Ⅲ. How to create a captivating Girl Power novel?
1) From the perspective of interests.
(a) Align the objectives (focus) of the story and the female lead’s aspirations.
The female lead’s aspirations will trigger and captivate the reader. There will be a segment of readers who share the same aspirations as the female lead. Once they are being drawn into the female lead’s perspective, the achievements of the female lead will resonate with the readers. The female lead must aspire to the wonderful things. If the reader feels that the female lead should be aspiring for something else other than what is written in the story, then it will be difficult for the reader to identify with the s********e people desire to be successful in their career, some seek a wonderful love, and some prefer to become independent. Everyone’s dreams are different. You may ponder what kind of aspirations your female lead has.
(b) Align the objectives (focus) of the story and the female lead’s behaviors.
The behaviors of the female lead will determine the plot twists and conflicts. A lot of novels lack continuation after the lead character easily attained the desired aspirations. A person can be proud of his or her successes because it was attained through hard work and persistence. Thus, the storyline can take the form of “Lead’s behavior during a conflict in the plot” to stage the contradictions and conflicts. However, one thing you need to be clear: The plot twist is to emphasize the lead’s character and is not done without good reasons. In the creation of Girl Power novels, if your female lead is resolute and decisive, then what kind of crisis can enable her to display these traits?
2) From the perspective of an interesting character in the Girl Power novel.
A spectacular character will create interest for the book and attract many readers. A spectacular character can create lots of interesting plots and scenes enabling the story to be even more interesting. A plain character cannot attract any readers. The female lead in the girl power novel should be mesmerizing. For example, she can be independent, full of fighting spirit, refusing to succumb to multiple failures, and eventually become successful. The reader will be captivated by the growth of the female lead and enable the reader to identify with her.
(a) The female lead of the Girl Power novel is courageous and determined to change her fate as she struggles at the bottom.
The male and female leads in Girl Power novels can be unequal. But, in the eyes of the female lead, she is equal to the male lead. She is self-confident and independent. The reader can see the sense of responsibility and tenacity in the female lead just as in other men. As Jane Eyre said to the male lead, “Do you think I can stay here and become nothing to you? Do you think that because I’m poor and obscure and plain that I am soulless and heartless? I have as much soul as you and fully as much heart. But if God had gifted me with wealth and beauty, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me as it is now for me to leave you. But God did not make it that way but our spirits are equal just as when we die and stand before God.”
(b) The female lead in the girl power novel has her own beliefs and aspirations. She discovers herself as she grows and as she pursues her aspirations.
The male characters can support the female lead’s growth but cannot contribute directly to her success. In short, the female lead’s successes are through the development of her abilities, in pursuit of her beliefs and her continual strive to strengthen herself.
(c) The female lead’s aura may be softened or weakened to enhance her humanity. A typical woman’s desires should not be avoided to enrich the female character. A woman can be selfish and lofty but after a person gets to know her, he will feel attracted and feel that she is adorable.
3) A spectacular girl power novel storyline mixed with other popular elements.
(a) Reincarnation/ Revenge: “Reincarnation” or “Revenge”, are some of the more popular elements. These are popular themes in Girl Power novels. Readers like the revenge of the Girl power. The readers like it mainly because of the strong conflict in the storyline. A female lead who had gone through all kinds of hardships to achieve her goals will be interesting. For example: In the story, Alpha’s Abandoned Mate, the female lead was cheated, betrayed, and even murdered by her ex-husband. After she was reincarnated, she unleashed her fury on her ex-husband with the male lead’s assistance to revenge herself.
(b) Escape while being pregnant/ Second chance: In modern novels, we can often encounter scenes of “one-night stands” or the male and female leads breaking off due to some misunderstandings. Thereafter, the female lead finds herself pregnant and decides to bring up the child on her own. In this category of stories, not only will the female lead bring up the child on her own, but she will also grow through her abilities and become successful in her career. This will show the strength of the female lead and trigger the reader’s empathy. When she finally meets the male lead, again, her transformation and appeal will mesmerize him. Thus, the male lead will begin to beg her for a second chance, giving this type of Girl power a satisfying outcome. For example: In the story, Year of Goodbyes, the female lead had a one-night stand with the man she was secretly in love with and then ran away when she became pregnant. Thereafter she worked hard to get her educational qualifications and then reconciled with the male lead after many years. The male lead later reunites with his daughter when the female lead had a successful career. They eventually ended up as a loving family.
(c) Contract Marriage/ Arranged marriage: We often encounter “contract marriages” or “arranged marriages” in urban love novels and werewolf stories. For example, the male and female leads got married not because of love but due to a family business alliance or for some reason, had a contract marriage. Thereafter the male lead was attracted to the female lead’s fortitude, courage, and unyielding character. These are the stories where love comes after marriage. For example: In the story, HER GRACE… (king of Alphas), the female lead was forced to marry a heartless and lofty Alpha and was treated coldly by the male lead. The female lead bravely retaliated and escaped. Her abilities strengthened as she grew and then helped the male lead defeat the villains. She ended up becoming the female king of Alphas.
(d) Rejection/ Counterattack: “Being rejected” is the perspective of werewolves. It is a common and good means to trigger the female lead’s plot growth. It is also a frequent contradiction in emotions and the plot. In Girl Power novels, the female lead will not languish after being rejected but she will start her new life. Here, there can be a combination of “ugly duckling”, “life’s experience”, and other elements that lead to the female lead’s metamorphosis. Then it can be combined with “Second Chance” or “New Love” and other elements to highlight the female lead’s counterattack to rise from “a lowly status” to become “a person of importance”. For example: In the story, Prince Reagan, the female lead chose to change her appearance after being rejected by her initial love. With her continued persistence, she turned from an ugly duckling into a swan and met her new love, Prince Reagan. She thereafter endeavored to ensure that she was worthy of becoming a queen.
Ⅳ. QA
(1) In my story, the female lead was initially rejected and hurt by the male lead. Thereafter towards the later part of the story, the male lead realizes that he has fallen in love with the female lead and begins to pursue her and the female lead forgives him. What should I write to enhance the uniqueness of the female lead?
A: In your story, the female lead was hurt by the male lead. He thereafter pursues the female lead and she forgives him. This is a rather clear storyline. If you want to align with Girl Power, then you should consider what did the female lead do after she was hurt. Did she passively wait for the male lead or did she choose to become so strong that the male lead and other men begin to take notice of her self-confidence and mental fortitude? Remember two points: 1. The female lead is the heart of the story; 2. The reader can see from the story the female lead’s growth from her initial weakness to become strong.
(2) If the growth of the female lead’s abilities was due to the support and help of the male lead, then is this Girl Power?
A: No, because the growth of the female lead came from external help and not from her hard work. Thus, this cannot be considered as a Girl Power story.
(3) If the female lead was strong and wealthy from the beginning of the story, can this be considered a Girl Power novel?
A: The Girl Power story’s female lead was not needed to start from a weak position to become strong. She can be very strong from the beginning to the end. For example, in our signed book Alpha’s Hybrid Mate, the female lead was a powerful 900 years old werewolf and vampire hybrid. In the story, we can see that the female lead had the allure of a mature and attractive woman. Such stories are very interesting.
(4) In Girl Power novels, does the female lead need to be destitute and poor from the bottom ranks of society?
A: Not necessary. The female lead can be a princess or the daughter of a wealthy family. As long as the story has a logical development and the female lead grows through her experiences.
