MASON’S POV:
I shove Maya to the ground and away from me as I pull my slacks up and run after my mate. I feel the need to explain myself, to make sure she’s alright.
“What the hell is your problem?” Maya shouts from behind me but I ignore her calls as I run through the packed house looking for my mate. I follow her scent into the backyard. That’s when I spot her, standing in the middle of the yard next to a tall blonde girl and a pack member, Ravi.
Ravi has been a loyal member of the pack since my father’s departure. He is the scout of the pack, he emerges himself in the town business making sure that no threats are coming our way.
Is that how he knows my mate? Why is he looking at her like that? No one is allowed to look at her like that but ME! The blonde nudges my mate closer to Ravi and my wolf growls inside.
What the hell is going on there?
It isn’t until Ravi excuses himself that my mate senses me. When our eyes meet the embarrassed expression covers her face. She quickly looks back down to the ground. I can’t help but smirk, she looks adorable. Her baby blue button-up dress that hugs her chest firmly but hangs off her hips, makes her look so innocent, but something inside of me tells me she is anything but that. A wolfish grin appears on my lips at the thought.
I can't take my eyes off of her and she can’t take her eyes off the ground. I can tell she wants to be anywhere but here and that thought makes me cringe. I don’t want to make her feel like that, but why is she here in the first place?
I walk up to Ravi who is now by the cooler getting drinks. He looks up at me as I approach him, “Hey Mason just getting a drink, did you need..”
“What is her name?” I tilt my head in her direction cutting him off.
“The one in the blue dress? Iris. I know her friend Ana from campus.”
Iris, the name suits her, it’s sweet but sexy at the same time. “Iris,” I say aloud, just to feel it roll off my tongue.
Ravi tilts his head quizzically, “Yeah. I mean, I can introduce you?”
I don’t remember my immediate response to Ravi but we’re already halfway to where she stands. Suddenly I’m super nervous, I lean on my wolf to encourage me but he’s running circles in my head, making my nerves worse. He won’t be of any help. It's not like I haven’t been around her for a whole month. I can do this. Just say hello.
I groan because this is different, I have a minute to talk to her without the loud music and chaotic setting that I usually see her in. Perhaps, question her about barging into my room without knocking? Even though ironically I’m not even upset about it. What was she doing upstairs in the first place?
“Ana, Iris. This is Mason, he’s the pack.. er.. He’s a good friend,” Ravi introduces us.
I take Ana's hand shaking it but my eyes stay locked on Iris. Even when I feel her friend checking me out. I smirk waiting for Iris to do the same. She doesn’t, instead she glances up at me through her eyelashes red staining her cheeks. Iris extends her hand to me, I hesitate only a moment before my large callused hand takes her dainty soft one.
The moment we connect I feel fireworks shoot up my arm, fueling the irresistible pull towards her. She recoils back breaking our touch and meets my eyes with a shocked expression.
Did she feel that too?
Mate
My wolf is fighting like never before to be free but it’s not the time, with everything I have I block him out.
“Iris, do you have a moment?” I gesture with my hand away from the group. She looks over at her friend pleading for something. When her friend doesn’t save her she follows me a few feet away.
We’re standing just inches from each other and when our eyes meet I can see the vulnerability and nerves in hers. My heart aches at the thought of her being afraid of me.
Before I have a chance to open my mouth, she blurts out.
“I am so sorry, I was looking for the bathroom, and then I smelt something, and I don’t know I just followed the smell. I didn’t want to, well I didn’t mean to…”
“Stop!” She looks stunned as I interrupt, she looks down at the floor again; like a scared child.
Don’t be afraid of me.
I don’t mean to scare her, but her confession takes me by surprise. “What do you mean you smelt something?”
“Uh I mean I smelt… Well, you. I smelt you.” She finally meets my eyes again with pleading ones.
She smelt me. So, she’s known all this time that we are mates. She can smell me and obviously, she can sense me by the way she looks at me every time I enter the room. She f*****g knew we were mates and didn’t say anything? I clench my jaw, anger rises within me.
I grab her elbow and pull her closer, so no prying ears can hear “You knew and you didn’t say anything?” I whisper yell.
She looks at me stunned, but doesn’t respond nor does she pull away, "You knew we were mates and you didn't say anything?" I ask again and now I am furious, she was just going to act oblivious to us being made for each other? I have no right to be mad because yes technically I am doing the same thing, but this somehow still feels like a betrayal.
"What... what are you talking about?” Iris pulls her arm from my grasp and I feel the cold that comes from her pulling away from me.
"We are what? What the hell is a mate?" I can see the confusion on her face.
I take a step back, shit...
