The cave was cold, carved deep into the mountain’s side, lit only by the flicker of Kaelen’s summoned flame. Seraphina sat against the stone wall, hugging her knees, the weight of what she had just learned pressing into her chest like iron.
“I’m not who I thought I was,” she whispered.
Kaelen crouched by the fire, glancing over at her. “You’re still you.”
“No,” she said sharply, meeting his gaze. “I’m a weapon. That’s what the prophecy says, isn’t it? That my blood, my power, it was meant to tear the realms apart or bind them.”
His jaw tightened. “You’re not just a weapon, Seraphina. You’re a choice. And right now, you're choosing who you want to become.”
She laughed bitterly, tears burning her throat. “Easy for you to say. You were born into darkness. You knew what you were.”
“And I still question it every day.” His voice was low. Honest. “Don’t think I haven’t bled under the weight of who I’m supposed to be.”
Silence stretched again. But this time, it wasn’t cold it was thick with something else.
Understanding.
The air shifted. Magic buzzed faintly between them. Her fingertips tingled, and she saw the flare of Kaelen’s pupils he felt it too.
“What happens if we give in to it?” she asked quietly, not sure if she meant the bond or the fire between them.
Kaelen didn’t answer right away. He stood, crossed the space between them, and knelt in front of her.
“Then the world changes,” he murmured.
Before she could speak, a sudden tremor shook the ground. Dust rained from the ceiling.
Kaelen was on his feet instantly. “They found us.”
Seraphina stood too, her energy spiking uncontrollably. She wasn’t ready. She wasn’t trained. But this time she didn’t want to run.
“Let them come,” she whispered, eyes glowing faintly. “I’m done hiding.”
Kaelen gave her a look one of pride, maybe even admiration and reached for his blade.
The mouth of the cave exploded inward, showering them with rubble. Through the dust stepped a squadron of Crimson Guard, their armor glinting, faces masked. But it was the woman in front that made Seraphina’s blood run cold.
“Mother,” she breathed.
Queen Liraen of the Sun Court stood tall and regal, dressed for battle in golden armor etched with ancient runes. Her eyes met Seraphina’s, and for a moment, neither of them moved.
“Step away from him, Seraphina,” the Queen said calmly, but her magic was already rising like a golden tide.
Kaelen stepped forward, weapon raised. “She’s not going anywhere with you.”
“This is none of your concern, Shadow Prince.” Liraen’s voice was ice. “You will stand down or be destroyed.”
“You’ll have to kill me first.”
Seraphina was frozen between them—her past and her future. Her mother, her blood. Kaelen, her fate. The prophecy screamed in her veins.
“Enough!” Seraphina raised her hands, and the magic that erupted from her was blinding—silver light met gold and black in a collision of power that shook the entire cave.
When the dust settled, Queen Liraen stood back, her expression unreadable. “So the bond has begun,” she said. Not a question. A fact.
Kaelen’s breathing was heavy. “You knew?”
“Of course I knew.” Liraen looked at her daughter with something almost like sadness. “Why do you think I hid you? Why do you think I trained you to hate him?”
Seraphina’s hands dropped. Her voice cracked. “You lied to me.”
“To protect you.”
“No,” she said, stepping back. “You did it to control me.”
Liraen didn’t deny it.
“I choose my own fate,” Seraphina whispered, and the magic in her heart burned like wildfire.
With one final glance at her mother, she turned to Kaelen. “Let’s go.”
The two of them vanished into the night, their powers surging together as one. And behind them, Queen Liraen stood in silence, watching the path her daughter had chosen a path that would either save their world… or end it.
