Colliding Worlds

Alice’s POV ***************************** Macon and I arrived at Alex’s grand mansion with the twins Paul and Nicol, the opulence of the estate suffocating me before I even made my way in. The picture-perfect settings—the gardens which were properly manicured, the sparkling pool—all these were a huge difference to the tension creeping into my chest. This was my father’s world, the world that had abandoned and cast me aside. All it felt was just that I was forcing myself back into. As they guided Paul and Nicol through the grand hall, everything inside smelt of pure luxury. That is when I spotted him, making my heart slam against my chest. Lucas He was standing there, laughing at some stupid joke the woman beside him had said, his arm wrapped possessively around her waist. For a moment, my composure slipped, but memories of his betrayal and heartbreak immediately clawed their way to the surface, but I forced them down, raising my face high and smoothing my expression. “Lucas,” I greeted coldly, my voice carrying with it no emotions. His head turned towards me, the smile that had been on his lips immediately vanishing. His eyes immediately looked at me and Macon, then at the twins. “It’s been what…. Four years, I mean you look not that bad”. Lucas shot back, his voice filled with nothing but mockery. “ I see you even brought your new lover with you”. I had to give him a befitting reply. I could not let this go easily, he had no right to have his way this time around. “Yes, Macon is my new lover, something you were never good at being”. I shot back at him, my eyes looking towards Macon. But then that was when he saw the twins. His breath stopped for a second, his eyes widened, looking at Paul and Nicol with a strange look. Time seemed to freeze as he took a step, staggering back as his heart was racing like a drum in his ears, leaving only his mouth which was slightly parted in shock. It was the first time he ever saw them. And the resemblance to him was undeniable. Macon placed a protective hand around my waist, a silent signal of his support for me. Lucas’s eyes darkened as he misinterpreted the situation he was looking at. “Why the hell is he holding you that way ?” Lucas’s voice was low, filled with a fury he was trying hard to hold back. I raised an eyebrow, looking unconcerned by how he felt.“Not that it’s any of your business, but Macon is someone who actually knows how to be a decent human being.” Lucas took a step closer to me, forgetting that he had even brought a woman with him.“And them?” He pointed at Paul and Nicol, his hands shaking, “Are they…?… Are they my kids?” I shook my head, my voice barely above a whisper. “No Lucas. They’re not Yours”. I could see the desperation in Lucas’s eyes as he stepped closer, his voice trembling. “But they look just like me!”. I breathed out slowly, letting the weight of my words settle before speaking. “Yes, Lucas. They’re yours.” The impact on him was instant. His body went rigid, his breathing unequal. His eyes looked toward the twins, then back to me, as if trying to glue together a reality he had never expected to happen. “You kept them from me?” His voice was rough, unclearly heard like a whisper. My own anger, boiling under my skin, finally bubbled over, heat rising in my cheeks as I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms. I could almost taste the bitterness between us. “You lost your right the moment you chose to cheat on me with my stepster. The same moment, you decided to break our vows as if it meant nothing. The moment you shattered me.” His jaw tightened harder. “You don’t get to decide that.” “Yes I do.” I shot back at him. Stop acting as if I hid something important to you, pretending to be angry, and suddenly play the victim. You made your choice, Lucas.” Lucas took another step towards me, his voice thick with desperation, almost ….guilt. “Alice, they should know who their father is.” I laughed in disbelief, shaking my head. “No, Lucas. "What they deserve is a father who did not throw their mother away like she was some garbage.” He exhaled heavily, dragging a hand through his messy hair, clearly fighting with his emotions. His expression changed, his eyes hardening. “I’ll fight for them,” he whispered to me, “I’ll fight for custody.” I could not control myself from the sharp laugh that suddenly escaped me, but there was no humor in it. “I’ll be happy to see you try." I paused to scoff. "You think you can just come and claim them after four years? "You know nothing about being a father.” I continued as I eyed him with utter disdain. “We’ll see about that Alice”, he shot back as he made his way out of the grand event. **************************************** The days that followed proved that Lucas was not bluffing about what he said. It became a nightmare of legal meetings and court proceedings for me. All the court proceedings that went on blurred into a haze of cold conference rooms and legal jargon, each session a bitter battle between Lucas and I. I could feel my heart sink as the judge's words finally echoed in my ears. “Visitation rights granted to Lucas Forx.” The words sliced through me, leaving a bitter taste of despair as I fought back the tears, the reality of losing Paul and Nicol crushing down on me like a heavy stone.
