The poisoned Truth

1150 Words
“Macon?” My voice broke down as tears blurred my eyes. “How… Why are you still standing? Why didn’t the drink affect you?” He gently placed a hand on my shoulder, calm and steady. “Relax, Alice. I didn’t drink it. I had a feeling something was off.” My breath caught. “I had the wine tested. It was poisoned.” His voice dropped lower. “And I’ve already spoken to a cybersecurity expert, we’re working on wiping the video off the internet. But...” “But what?” I whispered, clutching the edge of the kitchen counter. “The judge saw the video. She’s demanding another hearing tomorrow.” Fear twisted in my gut. “But don’t worry,” Macon added, stepping closer. “We have proof that could ruin both Nina and Lucas.” A wave of relief crashed over me. And I didn’t think twice. I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face into his shoulder. “Thank you, Macon. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” His hand rested on my back. I heard him exhale. “Alice… Do you really love me? Or do you just love that I’m always there for you when you need me?” I froze. My heart ached. Why would he want to spoil the moment, I whispered to myself? “Let’s not go there right now,” I said. “We have a court case tomorrow.” Macon said nothing, just nodded as I pulled away and walked toward the twins' room. The morning came too soon. The sun rose with deceptive beauty, casting golden streaks across a sky that didn't know how broken I felt inside. After dressing in a plain navy dress, I stood by the window, sipping the hot coffee Macon had prepared. My fingers trembled against the cup. When we got to the courthouse, I noticed Nina before we even entered the courtroom. Her lips curled in a pretentious joy, as if she'd already won. She wore victory like perfume, too strong, too cheap. She had no idea the game had reversed. The judge didn’t waste time. “A video of Ms. Alice Landon experiencing a breakdown has gone viral,” Judge Fortus said sharply. “Mr. Forx and his legal team have provided documents from several doctors diagnosing her with a mental disorder.” I stood up slowly, my heart pounding, but I caught Nina’s eye. Her smile widened, wicked and triumphant. She thinks I’m cornered. “My honor,” my lawyer said, stepping forward with confidence. “Those documents are forged. And we have proof.” A hushed gasp swept through the courtroom. “If I may,” he continued, gesturing to the screen, “this wine was brought to Ms. Landon’s home yesterday by Mr. Forx and Ms. Landon, Nina Landon. Our private medical team tested it. It contained ingredients that temporarily mimic symptoms of psychosis.” The judge’s brow furrowed. He wasn’t done. “Both Nina and Lucas took an antidote beforehand. That’s why their tests came back clean.” Whispers filled the courthouse. Nina continuously shifted uncomfortably in her seat. The judge turned to her personal doctor, who had been sitting silently behind the bar. “Please examine the evidence.” Moments passed in tense silence as the doctor reviewed the data. Finally, he looked up. “It’s true,” he confirmed. “The wine was tampered with.” The room erupted. Judge Fortus slammed his gavel. “Nina Landon and Lucas Forx,” she said coldly. “This court finds you guilty of attempted poisoning. You are hereby sentenced to one month in prison, pending further investigation.” And just when I thought this whole drama would soon be over, Lucas stood up and buttoned his jacket. “Your honor,” he said with a calm voice, “I had no idea the wine was poisoned. Nina told me it was a peace offering. She gave me a piece of fruit, which, now I understand, must have been the antidote.” Judge Fortus stared at him in silence. Lucas added quietly, “I came with her to make things right with Alice. I didn’t know it would go so wrong.” I couldn’t read the judge’s expression, but something happened, since you know nothing about the poison, then you are free to go. Lock up Nina, she is guilty in this court. “No! Wait!” Nina shot up, her heels clacking against the floor. “I want a lawyer! You can’t do this to me!” Her voice echoed as the bailiff approached. “I have the right to be heard, this is illegal!” she cried, her face red with rage and panic. But no one listened. I watched as she was led out of the courtroom, her shoulders shaking, her head held defiantly high, but her eyes gave her away. Fear. Regret. And most importantly, Defeat. Macon, the twins, and I decided to celebrate our victory on a private island I had booked for the day. The island was big and peaceful—just what we needed to calm our tense spirits. Macon and I were drinking and chatting while the kids played in the water with their ball. They were having so much fun, they didn’t even notice us. One topic led to another, one moment flowed into the next, and before I knew it, I was in Macon’s arms, lying on top of him wearing nothing but my underwear. I felt so relaxed, so safe, I didn’t want to move. We were laughing, talking, and then suddenly, our lips met. It was a deep, intense and soft kiss. From the way he kissed me, I could tell he had always craved for this moment. We kept kissing, lost in each other world, enjoying every second until something changed. I noticed a strange figure approaching us. I tried to ignore it, tried to hold onto the warmth of the moment, but this was a private island. One I had booked. No one else was supposed to be here no one except the people I called family. I opened my eyes slowly and to my greatest shock, it was Nina. She was walking straight toward me, bold and unbothered, with a gun in her hand and bloodstains on her clothes. As Macon and I were trying to scramble and get up to shield ourselves, a small and sharp scream pierces the air “Nicol!” The twins were gone; they had disappeared. A deflated ball floats in the water. Nina smiled slowly, as long as you don't return the company and Lucas to me, then kiss those babies goodbye. You have only 48 hours to convince our father and or else I will have no mercy on anyone. She said before aiming the gun at me to shoot.
