Tides of deception

Lucas pov: My vision was a little blurry, but what I saw couldn’t be more clear. Alice? My Alice was in Macon’s arms, their faces so close it was obvious what had just happened. She looked peaceful. Comfortable. Like everything was fine. Like our kids hadn’t just been missing. My chest tightened. No. No, Alice, you said he was just a friend. So what the hell is this? ‘‘Alice promise me that you won’t leave me in this hospital alone?’’ Macon begged with a weak voice. I didn’t wait. I stormed into the room, yanked her away from him. “She’s not staying with you,” I snapped. My voice sounded like someone else. Rough and Bitter. “What the hell are you doing Alice?” I shouted with a sharp voice. “Our kids were missing and you were here kissing your half-dead lover?” She opened her eyes widely and I could see that I hurt her with my words through her facial expression but anger took over her immediately. “You are unbelievable,” she yelled back while forcefully removing her arm from my hands. “The twins are fine. They’re with my father. And it was your precious Nina who tried to hurt them.” I froze. “And just so you know, Lucas,” she backed at me with a cold voice. “I am single. I can kiss or love whoever I want.” I grabbed her by her wrist. “You are coming with me Alice.” And you can’t love whoever you want to love. "Let me go!" she cried, struggling to free herself But I didn’t release her. Not when Macon was watching us like that. Like he had a chance. Like he thought he could take her away from me. I picked her up and carried her to the car. She fought me the whole way, but I didn’t stop. Once she was in, she just stared out the window. Silent. Distant. Probably still thinking about him. I gripped the steering wheel tight. We got to her father’s mansion, and the twins ran out. “Daddy!” Nicol yelled. “Mommy!” Paul added. They hugged us like nothing had happened. Alice knelt down to hold them, but she still wouldn’t look at me. Something inside me was dying, maybe my heart. I thought about saying sorry. But the words wouldn’t come out. I drove all of us to my place for dinner. She didn’t say no, she just nodded and got in. For the kids. The chefs made dinner. The dinning was filled with different dishes to choose from, but it was quiet no communications just stares and the only sounds which came from the twins. After they finished their food and were filled, the nanny took them upstairs so they could bathe and read them bedtime stories. Alice silently walked to the balcony, leaving me behind, lost in thought, with my untouched wine and a lingering ache in my chest. It hurt more than anything, she should say something to me. I followed her after a minute. She stood on the balcony while the heavy wind hit her, her arms were crossed, and her hair was swaying behind her. She turned when she sensed me and started to leave, only for me to hold her hands and stop her abruthly. “Don’t leave me,” I said, gently while catching her wrist. “Please. Don’t walk away from me again. Not this time.” She refused but as she caught the sight of Nicol staring at us arguing she composed herself. “Mommy? Nicol called out, "Why aren’t you sleeping yet?” She softened immediately. My baby, are you okay?” “I’m scared,” he said. “Can you and Daddy sleep with me tonight?” Her jaw clenched. I knew she didn’t want to. Not next to me. But she smiled. “Okay, baby,” she said softly. “We’ll stay.” We laid in bed, the twins in the middle. Me and her, three inches apart. Not touching. Barely breathing. But she didn’t sleep. Neither did I. When the kids finally drifted off, she got up quietly and stepped out to the balcony. I stayed still, eyes half-closed, pretending to sleep. She pulled out her phone and dialed. Alice pov: Why do I still feel for this man, a man who slept with my step sister on my matrimonial bed during our wedding anniversary. Why can’t I move on? No, Alice focus on your plan. He doesn't love you, he is only regretting why he left you and he is trying to meet up with it. He only loves the new you Alice, the CEO of Bangor company, that's who he loves, that’s who he wants to win her heart back, don't give ears to his lies and new characters. As I laid down on the bed with Lucas and the twins, we stayed three inches apart from each other the twins were in the middle and we were on the edge of the bed. As soon Nicol and his sister drifted off I stood up from the bed and headed to the balcony, I picked up my phone and called Macon, ding… ding… “Hello? Macon?” “Alice,” he said, his voice stronger than earlier. “I’m okay. Are you? Are the twins alright?” “Yes… we’re fine.” “I know this isn’t the best time,” he said, “but I need to say it anyway. Don’t go back to him. Please, You kissed me, Alice. And I know what that kiss meant. Don’t pretend it didn’t happen.” My throat tightened. My chest burned. “You can’t just bring back feelings I’ve been trying to bury for long and then go to his house and sleep there like nothing happened. What do you take me for?” “She takes you for a damn fool,” Lucas’s voice came out of nowhere. Loud. Sharp. Ugly. He snatched the phone out of my hand. “Leave my woman alone,” he growled into it, then ended the call. I stared at him. Furious. “What the hell is wrong with you?” “Why the hell are you even talking to him?” he barked. “You kissed him, and now you’re here with me? Are you serious?” “I can’t believe you,” I said, my voice shaking. “You think I’m the same girl who begged you to love her? I’m not. I’m not her anymore.” I turned to leave. “I’ll come for the twins tomorrow. I don’t want to be here.” But he grabbed me by the waist. “You’re not leaving my estate by this time, It’s late and It’s not safe.” I shoved him off. “Don’t act like you care. You never did.” “I do care, Alice. I’ve tried to let go, I’ve tried to move on. But I can’t. There’s something about you, something I can’t walk away from.” “You’re just guilty, Lucas, That’s all. Guilty about cheating, guilty about abandoning your kids. That’s not love. That’s just shame telling on you.” “I didn’t know about the twins. If I had, I never would've” He stopped. Took a breath. “I want to be in their lives. I want to be a father to them. I’m begging you, Alice… just give me a chance to prove that.” “Fine. You want to be a father right? Show the court you’re responsible. As for me?” I scoffed. “Don’t even think about it.” I turned around. “I’ll come back for my kids in the morning. Take care of them.” That should’ve been the end. But Lucas grabbed me again. This time, his lips crashed into mine. I froze. For a few seconds, I didn’t know where I was, what I was doing. My mind kept spinning. And then I heard it. “Alice?!” Someone was downstairs. Shouting. I pulled away, breath caught in my throat. Who was it? Macon? Nina? Clara? Or… My father?
