It all felt like some dream, i couldn't put my mind exactly on why u would agree to this even when the reason was half dead on the hospital bed begging to be saved, hope in her eyes were all faded, doesn't matter now does it, the deed has already been done. When I woke up, I wasn't sure where I was. It took me a moment to remember the night before. The silken sheets. The taste of him. The way his breath trembled against my skin. The sound of his voice whispering my name like it meant something. But reality hit fast. The bed beside me was empty. His warmth, gone. The scent of his leather, musk, and desire still lingered on my skin, along with the ache between my thighs. I reached over, heart skipping, but all I found was a neatly folded note. Just one line, scribbled in bold handwriting: “Family dinner went better than expected. Thanks for keeping me distracted. D.” My stomach twisted. Family dinner? I blinked, rereading it. Was he... seeing someone? Engaged? Married? The thought curled in my gut like poison. No Maya would have told me. Right? I slipped out of bed and picked up my wrinkled dress from the floor, shaking as I pulled it over my body. My hands trembled, not from shame, but confusion. What did I just get used for? The elevator was waiting by the time I made it to the lobby, and outside, a sleek black town car purred at the curb. The driver was the same man from the night before, expression unreadable, holding the door open without a word. I slid in, unsure what else to do. The silence was thick between us as the car moved. He never spoke. Not until we pulled up outside a quiet, upscale café. “This is the stop,” he said. Before I could ask anything, the door opened and a woman stepped in older, graceful, and terrifyingly poised. Her pearls glinted against her pale neck. Her eyes, sharp and cold, didn’t blink as she handed me a cream-colored envelope. “You’ve been paid,” she said with a tone that brooked no argument. “That is all.” I stared at the envelope in my lap. I didn’t even need to open it to know what was inside. The weight of it told me everything. Still, the words were already bubbling out of me. “There was a note. In the room. About a family dinner. He said it went better than expected. I don’t understand what dinner is? Was I...?” She snatched the note from my hand before I finished the question. “That is none of your concern,” she snapped. “You’ve served your purpose. Take the money, disappear, and do not ask questions that are above your station.” Her lips tightened into a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Girls like you should know when to be grateful.” Then she stepped out of the car and vanished as if she’d never been there. I sat frozen for a full minute before daring to open the envelope. Inside were thick stacks of cash. Tens. Hundreds. Maybe thousands. It was more than I ever thought I’d hold in my hand. The shame didn’t hit until later. For now, all I could think of was my mother, her pale face in that hospital bed, the monitors beeping, the growing debt I couldn’t pay. I didn’t go home. I gave the driver a new address. “Take me to Westview General,” I said. When I got there, the nurses barely recognized me in last night’s dress, makeup smudged, shoes in my hand. I must’ve looked like I’d been through war. I marched to billing. “I want to pay what I can.” The man at the desk looked at me like I was lost. Maybe I was. I peeled off a stack of cash and shoved it under the glass. “My mother is in room 218. Mary Clarke. Apply it to everything.” He nodded, typing quickly. And still, the lump in my throat refused to go away. I did what I had to do. I sold one night of my life, one night of myself, for her. But I couldn’t shake the chill in my spine. The unanswered questions. The way that woman had looked at me, like I was a problem that needed to disappear. Like I’d just stepped into something far bigger than I ever meant to. Something dangerous, Something... unfinished. I sat by her bed early that morning, she wasn't conscious, hasn't been in a while, the machines beeping in a perfect rhythm. At times ill stare at it for so long, as though I could change her faith, but I couldn't no matter how hard I tried. I held unto her hand was about to rest beside her bed when the phone went alarming me, it was maya i picked up reluctantly, “How did it go” … It was fine, emm i got the payment already, ill drop by and give you a share of it while heading… “No no, its fine” shecut in “ you need it more than anyone right now am doing fine” I didn't reply, I still didn't understand her kindness. It all felt too real, after everything. If you're still looking for a job, I've got one for you though. It's at the company where I work though, a PA is needed for our CEO urgently, and… Of course I would take it, when's the interview.. There's no interview, it's urgent I've put in good words for you already, just email me your CV, I'll send you the address to see my manager tomorrow morning, come prepared if he likes you, you'll likely meet the CEO and start immediately. I was speechless, “ thank you for everything, i send it now”.
