“Foolish! You cannot!” The brother flexed a smug smile.
“Stella! You have no grounds to arrest us! What crimes did we commit?”
The superior leaned down and smiled, grinning ear-to-ear.
“The coven has long been watching you two. The magic crystal—it had finally detected you both unlawfully crossing the realm.”
The twins’ eyes almost bulged out from their eye sockets. They seemed to believe that they were discreet with their unlawful actions.
“Tsk, tsk. The headmistress has been very disappointed in you two. She had been extremely tolerant, but your evil deeds must come to an end. If only you hadn’t consumed yourself with forbidden magic...
Fortunately for me, I have risen in the ranks and outdone you, maniacal twins. I am now the headmistress’s right-hand person, the trusted confidant.”
“That's absurd! You are still beneath us! We are royalty! Mother won’t do this! Mother’s blood runs in our veins!”
“We went to great lengths to find this hideout. Thanks to the headmistress' effort, your location was made easy. Sadly, you’re no longer her favorite child. ”
That hit the nerve. Both gritted their teeth and silently plotting in their heads. One second later, the twins clouded the room with toxic, dark fog. Everyone coughed blood and covered their noses.
“Stop!” Stella yelled in between her coughing of blood. She released lightning strikes in the room, knocking down the things in sight, including the twins.
Zainne watched in silence as she braced herself inside the jar. The bold attack from Stella made her jar crack after falling on the floor. Her heartbeat raced. Her clammy hands were eager to break free. Still, she waited for the perfect moment to make a move.
The flash of lightning ended and the fog slowly disappeared.
“After them!” She heard their leader yell when the twins quickly rushed out of sight.
As soon as they all raced out, silence followed.
The crack of the jar didn’t cease, and Zainne took a moment to step back.
The sound of glass breaking was music to her ears. It started to echo around her until the glass jar burst.
Because of the strong pressure, she was thrown a few meters away, hitting her head in the process. She hissed.
Gradually, she grew in size.
She coughed from the dust, squinting her eyes to see the place completely. Almost everything was destroyed.
Glancing around, the house was full of hanging dead birds, creepy skulls, and weird sharp knives were on the ground.
Beside the huge, boiling pot, there was an untitled black book next to it. Her shaking finger immediately took the book. Skimming on pages until she reached a time travel spell. She had remembered how the witch played on the pot. She figured it could be her way back, but it required an irreversible sacrifice.
A part of her will be offered. And that part of her was her beast.
If her beast was sacrificed, she would become a helpless human. She will no longer devour rogues and shift into a Lycan form. Becoming temporary would be permanent.
To Zainne, it would be worth the risk. She didn’t even have second thoughts.
When she started to follow the instructions, shouts alerted her from outdoors.
“They’re not far away! I sensed a soul nearby.”
Zainne, in panic, made haste and dropped all the ingredients she could find. The final ingredient was her willing sacrifice. A few drops of her blood.
She sliced her palm deep and squeezed her hand, dripping down her blood into the pot. She grabbed the book and braced herself.
A ray of light emerged from the pot. Zainne remained unmoved even when her beating heart was palpitating. The witches were getting closer to finding her. Fortunately, she disappeared before they could even get a glimpse of her soul.
Beep...
Beep...
She woke up gasping and heaving in a hospital bed with a book in hand. Her narrow vision wandered around the room as the ringing of her ears were constant. She was familiar with the room.
Just in time, the doorknob jingled and adrenaline fueled her. She forced herself to move in her dizzy state, heading for the window.
“Doctor, Ryan! Please sign these release papers for patient room #4.” She heard a woman yell from the outside.
Before the door could open, she took the moment to jump out of the second-floor window.
THUD! CRACK!
She had a bad fall that caused her left leg to break.
“Aack!” She swallowed the pain as tears in her eyes clouded her vision.
Zainne refused to waste another second and ran limping into the forest as fast as she could.
