Chapter 5 — The New Beginning After Her End

653 Words
Zainne heaved and ran till sharp rocks and twigs grazed her skin. Blood rushed through her veins. Her pounding heart felt like it wanted to bust out of her chest at any moment. She limped far from the building as fast as her feet could take her. The good thing was, she hadn’t encountered any of the patrol warriors. It felt like an hour, but it had only been 35 minutes. She took a moment to compose herself. Her heavy breaths echoed. Leaves whispered with the wind. The sounds of singing crickets and birds chirping also accompanied her ringing ears. When she calmed down, she finally had a moment of stillness after a long-standing period of vigilance. The cool wind graced her skin, and the soft grass welcomed her bottom, never caring for her wounded feet as she leaned on a tree. She sat in perfect silence. She recalled meeting Doctor Ryan in her previous life. It was when she was hospitalized in the Blood Moon Pack. So she had returned in time before Devan had rescued her from her abusive adoptive parents. Moments later, Zainne could no longer contain the emotions swirling. She deeply misses her baby and was also buried in guilt by those children she had left behind with the witches. Little Vaughn was her pride and joy, and returning from the past would mean making tough decisions for her future. Decisions that she may lose her little Vaughn for good. The twin witches were after her son. And the only way to stop it was to avoid her mate at all costs. Tears welled up her stormy, grey eyes after realizing that there was no turning back. However, at a moment of longing, she felt conflicted. Whether she follows the same path and has her son back or makes a few changes. But it would be foolish to let Devan trample her again. She is, as they say, weak, and after having her beast sacrificed, it will solidify their cruel opinion of her. However, proving her worth to him and his pack was no longer necessary. She didn’t need their validation to define the importance of her existence. Finding love was no longer part of her survival. She was no longer that desperate. Accepting Devan again and reliving the pain would be a brainless move. This new life was her chance. Zainne covered her mouth. Refusing to make loud noises that may alarm werewolves on duty roaming around the area. She whimpered and swallowed her cries as she twisted her leg back in place. She tore a piece of her clothing and wrapped it around her wound. Sweats rained down from her forehead as she took heavy breaths. As hours slowly passed, there were no tears left to fall. Zainne now sat motionless. Recalling her experiences that she has now concluded are ridiculous—about the Moon Goddess, her ex-mate, and her beast's hunger for flesh. Fcking ridiculous! Looking down at the skin-covered book, it confuses her about how it managed to follow. Nevertheless, she believed that it might come in handy sometime. By the time Zainne wanted to return, it was already getting dark. She went back to the house where the Williams live. Most people would think that it would be foolish to return to that house. Her gut says otherwise. She needed some necessities to survive as a human, and the Williams were her first choice of target. She creeps behind a tree. Isabelle somehow sensed something was off and darted in her direction. Zainne quickly reacted in time and hid. Isabelle got a whiff of her scent, but later, she brushed it off. Regarding that, Zainne's presence was as unimportant as an ant. Zainne saw her stepsister making way down the pavement, heading to their unkept house. Her adrenaline suddenly spikes up. Rather than foolishly barging through the front door, she sneaked at the back.
