Chapter 5. The Alpha’s Obsession

1426 Words
✦ Haunted by Her Kael hadn’t slept in days. He was pacing the dark halls of the Alpha’s residence, his boots echoing on the stone cold floors. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her, bloody, broken… and walking away. Not crawling. Not begging. Walking. That image didn’t make sense to him. He’d left her for dead. And yet his wolf growled now, restless and tensed, pushing at the power of his control. “She’s gone,” Kael said to himself, grabbing the edges of the marble sink in his private chamber. “She’s nothing. An omega. Too Weak.” But the lies tasted bitter in his mouth. Because deep down, something else had awakened. Not guilt. Not pity. Obsession. It was as if rejecting her had opened some curse and spell inside him, a mirror that forced him to see the fractures in himself. And the worst part? He missed her. ✦ Her Scent, His Madness He had memorized how she smells now, silver frost and wild pine-but it wasn’t on purpose. It haunted him. The way it circled over his senses, invisible but unshakable. He’d passed the old clearing days ago where the rejection had happened. The ground was still marked with faint claw scarring. Blood dried into the earth ground. Something had shifted. She wasn’t dead. He could feel it inside. He stormed into his war room, sending the guards running. “Has there been any word about rogue attacks near the border?” he asked loudly. His Beta, Kade, hesitated. “There were some rumors. The Patrols spoke of a silver wolf in the dead forest. But sir..” “Find out,” Kael snapped at them. “And if you see her… don’t engage.” His Beta raised a brow. “But she’s rogue now. She’s a threat here” Kael growled. “Just bring to me her scent. ” ✦ Visions and Nightmares That night, it got worse. Kael dreamt of her again. Only this time, she wasn’t bleeding. She was crowned. Her white-blonde hair fell down to her back like the moonlight, her silver bright eyes glowing like stars. She stood on a battlefield, a throne behind her, her bare feet stained in blood. His blood. He dropped to his knees in the vision, shaking. She placed a foot on his chest but not gently and she said nothing. Then flames. Endless flames. He jumped awake, gasping, body drenched in sweat. His wolf screamed in his mind. “We made a mistake.” ✦ The Warning At break of dawn, Kael stood by the borderlands alone. The patrol had just returned, they were shaken. “She spared us,” one of them said. “Could’ve killed us all… but she didn’t.” Kael’s eyes narrowed on them. “She?” “She didn’t speak. But we saw her. Silver fur. She had glowing eyes. She stopped when she recognized us and then just… vanished into the trees.” Kael turned away, jaw held tight. It wasn’t mercy. It was a message. She was showing him that she wasn’t hiding. She was choosing not to kill. Yet. And that was driving him insane. ✦ Spiral of Control Kael punched hard to the nearest stone wall with a loud growl, his knuckles splitting open. Blood splattered across the stone quickly. His wolf roared inside of him, mad, relentless, pacing up and down like a prisoner who just realized the door was never locked only forgotten. “She let them live,” he whispered. “Why?” The answer twisted in his stomach. Because she knew he’d hear about it all. Because she wanted him to know. She was no longer reacting to him now. She was playing him. The hunter had suddenly become the hunted. And Kael… was starting to lose. ✦ Cracks in the Alpha Kael sat alone that evening, in the tall large hall built for war councils, but now empty. He ran a hand through his dark hair, eyes were heavy. “You rejected her,” he whispered to no one. His wolf growled low down inside him, more beast than companion to him now. “She was ours.” The regret came like fire in his chest fast. He’d chosen his power over fate. Logic over his instinct. And now… He was losing his mind piece by piece. All for a girl he called worthless. But now couldn’t forget. ✦ The Breaking of the Alpha Kael stood alone in the war chamber, but the air felt heavier to him now. Every part of his body was disturbed, his hands clenched, his jaw are locked, his eyes red from nights without good rest. The massive stone table, carved with the Black River crest, seemed meaningless to him now. Maps of rival territories were scattered all around it, but all he saw and know were pieces he couldn’t control anymore. The door creaked a little. His Beta, Kade, stepped in, but hesitant. “Alpha… the Elders want a word.” “I said I’m not to be disturbed now.” “They said it’s urgent. About… her.” Kael turn around slowly. “She’s gone,” he growled. “Why are they still whispering and talking about her?” Kade swallowed. “They’re not whispering anymore” The Council has received words that she survived… and they’re afraid.” Kael’s brow squeezes“Afraid?” Kade stepped closer. “One of the scouts reported that she shifted during a rogue attack recently. But not just any shift. Her wolf ” he paused, his voice suddenly uncertain or sure, “glowed.” Kael’s breath froze quickly. “She tore right through two trained rogues in seconds. Then disappeared like a smoke.” Kael looked away, but Kade continued. “The Council thinks she’s more than just a rogue now. They used a word I’ve never heard them say about a female before.” “What word?” Kael snapped. Kade’s voice dropped. “Alpha.” ✦ The Nightmare Crown That night, Kael’s dreams returned but only darker this time. He stood in a field where there was blood, his warriors all dead around him. The moon was gone, replaced by a throbbing red light that filled the sky like an eclipse of rage. His wolf refused to answer him. His power seem faded. And in the center of the battlefield was a woman in a white flame. Aria. But not as he remembered her. She was wearing a cloak of silver bones. A crown of glowing thorns above her head. In her hand was a blade of light, carved with an ancient symbol he didn’t understand. Behind her stood an army of wolves not Black River but something older. Wiser. More stronger. She raised the blade. And the earth itself cracked open under his feet. Kael fell down to his knees, trying to scream, but his voice was gone. She walked toward him, slow and silent, as the flames around her rose like wings behind her. “You rejected your fate,” she said. Her voice echoed like a thunder. “And now… I reject you.” She plunged the blade in her hand into his chest. Kael woke up screaming, soaked in his sweat, blood dripping from where his claws had pierced his own palms in his sleep. ✦ The Final Warning By morning, Kael was no longer pacing around. He was hunting. He stormed into the Elder’s circle, his eyes glowing with the threat of his wolf barely held back. “Find her” Now. I don’t care how. I want her scent, her path, her shadow-whatever it takes.” Find her” The room stayed silent for a second. Until one elder finally spoke. “And when we find her?” Kael’s jaw tensed up. “I’ll decide if she lives.” The old man shook his head in confusion. “Or maybe, Alpha… it’s no longer your decision to make.” Kael’s hand dropped to the handle of his blade. “What are you saying?” “I’m saying,” the elder said slowly and calmer “there are powers older than your rule. And they have already chosen their queen.” Kael’s wolf felt threatened deep low in his chest. But under that rage… was a worrying fear. Because for the first time in his life, he wasn’t sure he was the one the world would kneel to anymore to serve and obey. And deep in the cold hills out there.. something was rising
