CHAPTER 11eLokishini In the Township The skeletal head of the woman turns slowly towards us. It feels like her eyes go right through us. But then she focuses on our faces, staring first at Nomtha and then at me. As our eyes meet, there’s a sudden spark of recognition on both sides – those are Mama’s eyes, her slightly almond shaped dark brown eyes – without a shadow of doubt! “Mama!” I cry, dragging Nomtha into the stinking, damp hut where we both fall into her arms. I feel that my mother has become frighteningly thin. When I gently stroke her back, I can feel every bone. At this moment, we forget everything around us – the cold, the filth, the wet – even that Mama seems to be critically ill. We have found her; we are together again. That is all that matters now, we can sort everything
