GLOSSARYAIDS
AIDS is the abbreviation of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This is a state of breakdown of the body’s natural defences caused by the HI Virus, which can be transmitted from one person to another. It makes affected people vulnerable to a range of diseases (such as influenza, TB, diarrhoea or pneumonia). These are normally dealt with by the body’s defence mechanisms but can be fatal in people with a weakened immune system.
Antiretroviral Treatment (ART, also ARV)
Drugs that inhibit the spread of the HIV virus in the body and thus prolong life. Once begun, this therapy has to be taken for life, usually twice daily at regular times.
