24. Nothing for Nothing-2

239 Words
Jacob lay in bed, staring at the red silk tent above them. Emilia was curled up, sleeping soundly at his side, but he couldn’t quiet his mind enough to sleep. His cheek still tingled from where she’d kissed him. If Emilia wanted to be with him, then he would have everything he’d ever wanted. But if it was the tethering that made her want him, he would be taking advantage of the person he cared about most, and he could never do that. All he wanted was to be with Emilia. No, what he wanted right now was to know if Emilia, without any spells or magic, wanted to be with him. But that was impossible. There was no way to know what she would want without magic. Jacob dug the heels of his hands into his eyes. Does Emilia, my Emilia, without tethering or Dragons or Sirens, want me? The thought was rolling in his head when Emilia turned in her sleep and instinctively found the place on Jacob’s chest where her head seemed to belong. Jacob smiled for a moment. Maybe the Siren was trying to tell him something. Maybe all he needed was to ask the right question. Ask for something the right way, and you can get it. His mind began to race, sorting through all the different ways to ask for the same thing, and as he congratulated himself on his own brilliance, Jacob drifted into sleep.
