13. Child of the Pendragon-2

190 Words
Emilia lay in bed, her heart pounding. She could hear the guards pacing the perimeter of the camp, but the fires had stopped crackling. Everyone who would sleep tonight was already in bed. Emilia pushed her covers slowly aside. She had gone to bed with her clothes on. Her sneakers were unlaced and waiting for her next to her backpack under the bed. She slid them slowly out and pulled on her shoes. Claire sighed, and Emilia froze, her heart beating in her throat. Minutes passed, and Claire’s breathing slowed, becoming even. Emilia stood and quietly slipped her pack onto her back. She looked at Claire, her blond hair splayed out on her pink pillow, contentedly sleeping, safe and warm. Tears welled in her eyes. Claire would be so hurt. Emilia was abandoning her. She bent down and gently kissed her head. “I’m sorry,” she whispered before slipping out of the tent into the cool night air. “You ready?” Jacob whispered from the shadow next to the tent. Emilia spun to face him. Jacob smiled. “Do you think I didn’t know you’d try to sneak off without me?” Emilia smiled back. “I’m glad it didn’t work.”
