10. Wizard’s Wand-1

550 Words
10 Wizard’s Wand The next morning, Jacob sprung out of bed, eager to tell Aunt Iz about his success and to show everyone his wand. “My wand,” he said to himself as he picked it up off the bedside table. “Guess I really am a wizard now.” He went to the mirror and posed with the wand, wanting to make sure he looked impressive. He started dueling imaginary opponents, darting across the room, defending a dark-haired, grey-eyed maiden from a thousand foes. He dove and rolled across his bed, impressing himself with his catlike landing. Jacob cringed as giggles carried through his open window, sure he had been caught dueling with the air. He walked sheepishly over and looked out, but no one was watching him. Emilia and Claire didn’t even look up from their yoga practice on the lawn. Claire had fallen and was enjoying lying in the grass more than performing her exercises. Emilia reached down, trying to convince her to get back up, but Claire yanked Emilia to the ground. The two girls wrestled on their mats, Emilia scolding through her giggles. The pink of Claire’s mat screamed against the green of the grass, while Emilia’s pale purple blended in with the soothing morning. Jacob smiled. The colors suited them both perfectly. He ran from his room and bounded through the house to the yard, where Emilia was still trying to pull Claire off the grass. Claire finally scrambled to her feet when she saw Jacob running toward them. “Morning,” she said. “Would you like to ohmmmm with us?” Claire danced around Jacob, flapping her arms. “The psycho bird dance is good for the soul.” “No.” Emilia dragged Claire back to her mat. “Yoga is good for focusing your energy so you stop turning all of my things pink, including my cat.” “But don’t you think it’s an improvement?” At the fiery look on Emilia’s face, Claire fled for the house. “You forgot your mat!” Emilia called after her, but Claire’s bright blond hair had already disappeared through the veranda doors. Emilia shook her head and started rolling up the mats. “I really think that girl is worse than I ever was.” She looked at Jacob for an answer, but instead of saying anything, Jacob held his wand out to her. She studied the stick for a long moment. “You did it. You healed the tree.” “Yep, and this was its thank you gift.” He twirled the wand between his fingers like a baton. “That’s amazing!” Emilia squealed as she flung herself at him. Jacob staggered from the impact before wrapping his arms around her. “You did it so quickly. Now they’ll have to let you stay! Does Iz know? She’ll be thrilled! Everyone will be.” She kissed him on the cheek. “Careful,” Jacob said, even though his stomach purred at her level of enthusiasm. “Don’t want to upset anyone.” “What, Dexter?” “I don’t think he’ll be too happy about me staying,” Jacob said, secretly hoping Dexter had seen the whole thing through the windows. “Of course he wants you to stay with us.” Emilia bent to roll her mat, no longer looking him in the eye. “Don’t judge Dexter, Jacob. He really is a great guy.” Jacob tensed. “Mmm-hmm” was the only noise he could make. Emilia whacked him playfully in the stomach with her mat. “Really, don’t. Just try to get to know him. Please.”
