14. What Tomorrow May Bring-2

221 Words
Jacob lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking of Emilia. How many times she had climbed through his window. How many days it had been just the two of them at school. And it had never mattered how bad things were as long as he had her. Emilia smiling. Emilia laughing. He was in love with her. The thought of Dexter kissing her, protecting her, made a snake curl in his stomach. He had always been in love with Emilia, and now he was going to do something about it. He would fight for her with everything he had. And the Dragons? He pictured the vague threat the Grays all feared. It didn’t feel like his fight. A few people he had never met were missing. Some settlements he had never even heard of were being threatened. The Council was only a faraway authority to him. But Emilia. He took a breath, and for a moment he could smell her scent as though she were lying next to him. If it was her fight, then it would have to be his, too. There was nothing he wouldn’t give to protect her. He didn’t know what was coming, but Samuel was right. All he could do was wait for what tomorrow may bring. As Jacob slid into sleep, visions of fire and floods pulled him into darkness.
