Chapter 21: A New Beginning

524 Words
The morning air was crisp, sunlight dancing through the trees as Anya stood outside her family’s cottage. Her bags were packed, her heart full of nerves and anticipation. Alex hugged her tightly, his voice soft. “Remember what I taught you. Stay strong. Trust your instincts.” Her mother kissed her forehead. “And don’t forget to eat properly, okay? Call us whenever you can.” Ashton and Lucy came to say their goodbyes too. Lucy hugged her tightly. “You’re going to be an amazing doctor, Anya. Make us proud!” “Always,” Anya smiled, wiping away a small tear. She glanced toward the distant hill where the grand packhouse stood. Her chest ached for just a moment. Damon. Ethan. I’m really leaving now. Aurora’s calm voice whispered in her mind, Everything is going to be alright, Anya. We’re moving forward. With one final breath, Anya turned away and stepped into the waiting car. The human world buzzed differently. The city where the university was located was vibrant, filled with people, lights, and an energy so unlike the quiet woods of Blue Moon Pack. When she arrived at the university campus, Anya’s awe deepened. Tall buildings, lush green lawns, and groups of humans bustling with excitement. She was led to her dorm building and given her room key. Inside, she found a bubbly brunette already unpacking. “Hi! I’m Susan! You must be my roommate!” the girl grinned, extending her hand. Anya smiled warmly. “I’m Anya. It’s nice to meet you.” Within minutes, they were laughing like old friends. Susan was loud, funny, and a little chaotic—everything that balanced out Anya’s calm and quiet demeanor. “Wait until you try the cafeteria lasagna,” Susan said. “It’s either amazing or a crime.” Anya quickly immersed herself in her studies. She enrolled in intensive pre-med classes—biology, human anatomy, chemistry—but she also signed up for electives that tugged at her heart. Wild Animal Anatomy Veterinary Science and Emergency Field Medicine Mythological Creatures in History (just for fun) Her professors were impressed with her intellect and calm under pressure. The human students admired her quiet beauty and focus. Despite being surrounded by a world so different from her own, Anya was thriving. Still, there were quiet moments when she would stare at the sky or out her dorm window and think of them. Damon, with his intense gaze. Ethan, always standing one step ahead, protective. The rejection. The ache. Aurora remained close in her mind, comforting her through each pang of memory. We’ll heal, Anya. One day, their decision won’t hurt as much. Every few days, Anya called home. Her mother would give updates on the cottage, and her father would ask about her classes and training. “Are the humans treating you well?” Alex asked. “They’re nice,” Anya smiled. “My roommate Susan is a little chaotic, but I like her.” Lucy messaged her often, and Ashton sent her book recommendations to “stay nerdy.” Even miles away, Anya still carried a piece of her pack with her.
