Chapter 5: Something Unfamiliar

982 Words
By the next afternoon, Cassandra was already seated in the library before Daniel arrived. She didn’t know why she came early. And she didn’t want to think about it. Her books were open, her notes neatly arranged, but her eyes kept drifting toward the entrance every few seconds. It was distracting. Annoying. Unnecessary. “You’re early.” She looked up quickly. Daniel stood there, slightly surprised, a small smile already forming on his face. “I could say the same,” she replied, quickly regaining her composure. He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down. “I didn’t expect you to be the one waiting.” “I’m not waiting,” she said immediately. “I came to study.” “Of course,” he said, nodding like he believed her. That made her narrow her eyes slightly. --- They started working, going over their notes and organizing their ideas for the presentation. For a while, everything felt normal—focused, quiet, controlled. Until it wasn’t. “Daniel!” A female voice called from behind. Cassandra’s pen paused. She didn’t look up immediately. She didn’t need to. “Hey,” Daniel responded casually. Now Cassandra looked. A girl stood beside their table, smiling brightly. She looked confident, comfortable… like she belonged in his space. “I’ve been looking for you,” she said. “You didn’t come for lunch.” Daniel rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, I got caught up with something.” Her eyes shifted briefly to Cassandra. “Oh… I see,” she said, her smile changing slightly. “You’re busy.” Cassandra felt something twist in her chest. It was small. Unexpected. Unwanted. She quickly looked back down at her book. “This is Linda,” Daniel said. “We’re in the same class.” Cassandra nodded politely. “Cassandra.” Linda smiled again, but there was something different about it this time. “Well, I won’t disturb,” she said, though her tone suggested she already had. “Don’t forget about later.” “I won’t,” Daniel replied. She gave him one last look before walking away. --- Silence. Cassandra turned a page, though she hadn’t read a single word. “You stopped writing,” Daniel said. “I didn’t,” she replied quickly, even though she had. He leaned slightly forward. “You did.” Cassandra sighed, placing her pen down. “Who is she?” she asked before she could stop herself. The moment the words left her mouth, she froze. Why did I ask that? Daniel raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised—but not in a bad way. “A friend,” he said simply. “Why?” Cassandra shook her head quickly. “No reason.” But her voice didn’t sound convincing. Daniel watched her for a moment, then smiled—slowly. “Were you… jealous?” Cassandra’s head snapped up. “What? No.” Too fast. Too sharp. Too obvious. Daniel chuckled softly. “Relax, I was just asking.” “I’m not jealous,” she repeated, this time more controlled. “Alright,” he said, raising his hands slightly in surrender. “I believe you.” But his smile said otherwise. --- Cassandra picked up her pen again, trying to focus, but her thoughts were all over the place. Jealous? That didn’t make sense. She had no reason to feel that way. None. And yet… The way that girl had spoken. The way she had looked at him. The way she said “Don’t forget about later.” It bothered her. And she hated that it did. --- “You’re thinking too much again,” Daniel said. Cassandra exhaled slowly. “You talk too much.” He laughed. And this time— she didn’t hold back. A small laugh escaped her lips before she could stop it. They both paused. Cassandra blinked, slightly shocked at herself. Daniel looked at her, genuinely surprised. “Wait… you can laugh?” She frowned immediately. “I always could.” “I’m just saying,” he teased. “This is new.” “It’s not new,” she insisted. “Hmm,” he said, leaning back. “I think I like this version better.” That made her go quiet. Because something about the way he said it— felt real. --- The moment softened. For a while, they just sat there, not rushing, not forcing anything. Just… existing in the same space. Comfortably. And that scared Cassandra more than anything else. --- “Why are you like this?” The question came out before she could stop it. Daniel looked at her. “Like what?” “Calm,” she said. “Patient. Like nothing bothers you.” He didn’t answer immediately. For once, he looked away. “It’s not that nothing bothers me,” he said quietly. “I just don’t let everything control me.” Cassandra watched him. There was something deeper there. Something he wasn’t saying. “You make it look easy,” she said softly. “It’s not,” he replied. Their eyes met. And for a brief moment, it wasn’t about assignments or jokes or teasing. It was something else. Something honest. --- Cassandra looked away first. “I should go,” she said, closing her book. Daniel nodded slowly. “Yeah… we’ve done enough for today.” They packed their things in silence. But this time, it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was… thoughtful. --- As Cassandra walked away later, her steps were slower than usual. Her mind replayed everything. The laughter. The jealousy. That quiet, emotional moment. She stopped briefly and sighed. “This is exactly what I didn’t want,” she whispered. But her voice didn’t sound as certain anymore. Because deep down— something unfamiliar had already begun to grow. And no matter how hard she tried… she wasn’t ignoring it anymore.
