Their heads disappeared. The Chief Inspector then examined the roof with care. On the opposite side to where the ivy climbed he found a drain-pipe running from the gutter. The pipe was rusty, and in the rust were a number of long smooth smears. The Inspector lay flat and peered over the edge. The smears ran all the way down the pipe. The Inspector rose and, crossing again to the ivy, examined it more closely. "Down by the pipe and up by the ivy," he said. He crossed again to the pipe, and swinging his legs over, slid down it till he reached the lawn, landing with one foot in a small rose-bush. Something moved as his weight came upon it.
