Chapter 7 "WAKE up, John!" "Give over, Bertha," said William Ferris. "Wake up," repeated his wife. Ferris realised that he was being shaken, not too gently, by the shoulder. He sat up and thrust a thin fist into a dull eye. "What is it?" he asked. "Listen!" said his wife. Ferris listened. A loud, familiar call was sounding in the street outside. Ferris, fully roused, swung his legs over the edge of the bed. His feet groped for his slippers. The call was passing beneath their window. "'ORRIBLE DOUBLE MURDER IN EASTREPPS THIS EVENING!... 'Orrible murder!... 'Orrible murder!... 'Orrible murder!..." The voice died away as the man passed. Already Ferris was out of bed. He crossed the room and thrust his head into the night, to find that it was one of a score similarly displayed. Wind
