Chapter 7: The Armoury

430 Words
The white rug was gone, replaced by a deep crimson mahogany flooring that Julian had installed within forty-eight hours. The message was subtle, but clear: the blood had been absorbed, integrated, and conquered. Elena stood at her drafting table, but she wasn’t sketching suits for a runway anymore. She was staring at a blueprint of a lightweight, Kevlar-weave fabric that Julian’s tech team had delivered. Beside her, Julian sat with his laptop open, a map of the Manhattan shipping docks glowing on the screen. For the first time since their wedding, the door to her studio was wide open, and the silence between them was gone. "The Valenti family controls the northern ports," Julian explained, not looking up from his screen but acknowledging her presence. "That’s how they import their illegal firearms. If I cut off their supply chain, Don Valenti loses his leverage over the other families. He becomes desperate." "And a desperate wolf bites," Elena said, stepping up to his desk. She dropped a sample of a thick, flexible charcoal fabric onto his laptop. "This is a carbon-fiber blend. It’s s***h-resistant and dense enough to absorb the kinetic force of a small-caliber round, but it drapes like heavy wool." Julian picked up the fabric, feeling its weight between his fingers. He looked up at her, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "You really are designing armour." "If I’m going to be a Salvatore wife, I’m going to be the most stylish one in history," she said, leaning against his desk. The fear that had paralyzed her weeks ago had hardened into something sharp and resilient. "But you’re missing something about Valenti’s ports." Julian raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And what does a fashion designer know about maritime logistics?" "I know about customs," Elena said smoothly. "Three months ago, before all of this, my imported Italian silk was held at the northern port for two weeks because of a 'clerical error.' Valenti isn't just smuggling; he’s using legitimate luxury import licenses to bypass federal inspections. If we seize those manifests, we don’t just stop his guns. We bring the FBI down on his head." Julian stared at her, the dark intensity in his eyes shifting from protective to genuinely captivated. He stood up, towering over her, but his hands were incredibly gentle as they settled on her waist. "You are entirely too brilliant for your own good, Elena," he murmured, pulling her flush against him. "I learned from the best," she whispered, just before his lips met hers, sealing a partnership that was no longer just a contract.
