Chapter 2: The Safety of a Cage

1111 Words
The interior of Julian’s SUV smelled of expensive leather and air conditioning, a stark contrast to the humid, iron-scented chaos of the SoHo street they had just fled. Elena pressed herself against the passenger door, her hands trembling so violently she had to sit on them. She watched the neon lights of Manhattan blur past the tinted windows. Julian drove with one hand, his expression entirely unreadable, while his other hand pressed a dark cloth against his bleeding shoulder. He hadn't spoken a word since he cleared her studio's back alley. "Where are we going?" Elena finally managed to choke out, her voice sounding small even to her own ears. "Are you taking me to a hospital? You're going to bleed out on my leather I mean, your leather." Julian glanced at her, a brief flicker of amusement crossing his sharp features before vanishing. "I have my own doctor. Going to a hospital leaves a paper trail. A paper trail tells the people who shot your windows out exactly where to find us." "Us," Elena repeated, the word heavy and terrifying. "There is no *us*. I am a designer. I make mood boards. I argue with fabric suppliers about shades of chartreuse. I don't get shot at!" "You don't," Julian agreed smoothly, turning the heavy vehicle down a private, subterranean ramp in Tribeca. "And you won’t again. I’m fixing it." The SUV came to a halt in a pristine, underground parking garage. Before Elena could even reach for her door handle, it was pulled open from the outside. A massive man in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit stood there, his face expressionless. "Sir," the big man said, his eyes scanning Julian’s bloody shoulder before landing on Elena. "The perimeter is secure. Dr. Bianchi is upstairs." "Good. Take care of the car, Marco. And get a crew to *Atelier Elena*. Clean the glass, board the windows, and pay off anyone who saw anything. No police reports." Julian stepped out of the car, adjusting his ruined shirt as if he had merely spilled coffee on it. He looked back at Elena, holding out a hand. "Come." Elena hesitated, but looking at Marco—who looked like he could snap her in half like a piece of chalk she decided following Julian was her safest bet. They took a private elevator straight up into a penthouse that looked more like a fortress than a home. It was minimalist, sleek, and dripping with old-money wealth. Polished concrete floors, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson River, and an oppressive, heavy silence. Within minutes, an elderly, sharp-eyed man with a medical kit was ushered into the living room. Julian sat on a leather sofa, completely stoic as the doctor cut away his shirt and began digging a deformed piece of lead out of his shoulder. He didn't even flinch. He just kept his dark eyes locked on Elena, who was hovering awkwardly by a marble kitchen island. "The bullet missed the artery," Dr. Bianchi murmured, stitching the wound with practiced efficiency. "But you're getting sloppy, Julian. Your father wouldn't have let a tail get that close." "My father is dead, Doctor," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a sudden, freezing chill. "And it wasn't a tail. It was an ambush. Someone leaked my route." The doctor finished, packed his bags without another word, and bowed his head slightly before Marco escorted him out. Julian stood up, pulling a fresh, crisp white shirt from a nearby bedroom and slipping it on. He left the buttons loose, walking over to the kitchen island where Elena stood. Now that the adrenaline was fading, the sheer reality of the situation was crashing down on her. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice cracking. "Really." Julian leaned against the counter, just inches away. Up close, she could smell his cologne again sandalwood and something distinctly dangerous. "My last name is Salvatore," he said quietly. Elena’s breath hitched. *Salvatore.* Even a civilian who kept her nose buried in fashion magazines knew that name. They weren't just criminals; they were the apex predators of the city's underworld. The family that controlled the docks, the unions, and half the real estate in New York. "You're the..." "The head of the family," Julian finished for her. "Yes." Elena took a step back, her back hitting the edge of the counter. "I need to go home. I have a fashion show tomorrow. My life savings are in those garments. If I don't show up......" "If you show up, you die," Julian interrupted, his voice firm but surprisingly gentle. "The men who attacked me belong to the Valenti family. They saw you help me. In their world, that makes you my accomplice. If they catch you, they will use you to get to me." "Then let them!" Elena cried, tears finally stinging her eyes. "Tell them I don't know you! Tell them I hate you!" "They won't care," Julian said. He took a step closer, closing the distance between them until she had to look up to meet his gaze. He reached out, his thumb gently catching a tear that had escaped down her cheek. His touch was shockingly warm, his hand calloused but careful. " "Listen to me, Elena. I am going to protect you. But to do that, I need to make you untouchable." Elena swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs. "How?" "Under the commission's rules, a civilian witness is fair game," Julian explained, his dark eyes burning into hers. "But a Salvatore wife is not. An attack on my wife is an act of war that the other families will not support. It forces the Valentis to stand down." Elena’s jaw dropped. "Wife? You.... you want me to marry you? We met twenty minutes ago!" "It’s a contract. A legal shield," Julian said smoothly, though there was a strange, possessive glint in his eyes that belied his cold logic. "You will live here. You will have total security. Your studio will be rebuilt, funded completely by me. You can design your collections from here, and when the Valenti threat is eliminated, we can quietly dissolve the arrangement. But until then... you belong under my roof." Elena looked around the massive, luxurious penthouse. It was beautiful, but as she looked back at Julian this powerful, lethal man who was offering her safety in exchange for her freedom she realized exactly what it was. It was a golden cage. "And if I say no?" she whispered. Julian’s gaze softened, just a fraction, but his answer was absolute. "I won't let you say no. I'm keeping you alive, Elena. Whether you like it or not."
