Chapter Four AMERA
I woke up to a bright light.
The light was so bright that I had to let my eyes warm up to it, gradually.
I tried to move my head but I felt something on my face.
Lifting my hand from what felt like silk sheets… I
 Wait…. Sheets? Silk sheets?!
 I’m supposed to be homeless.
How did I end up here??
I checked myself and I wasn’t wearing my dress from yesterday.
How am I in silk pjs??
I hurriedly sat up looking around and…. Whoooaaa
 Where am I?
 How did I get here?
The last thing I remember was deciding to get revenge on The Pauls.
I heard the door open and an older woman walked in.
“Oh, you’re awake…. how are you feeling, dear?”
Her voice carried genuine concern that almost threw me off
 “I… I’m okay” I managed
“Are you concussed? Does your cheek still hurt? Your wrist?”
She asked frantically, lifting the arm of my shirt.
Something about that tugged at my heart and my eyes started tearing up
“Oh dear, did I say something wrong?”
I couldn’t feel my tongue because suddenly, I had a rush of emotions.
Everything that I went through just hit me like a turning of brakes.
From the break up, to being thrown out and to almost being taken advantage of.
The tears began streaming down my face uncontrollably.
 “I’m sorry, darling. Come here”
She wrapped her arms around me and oh!
This woman just melted forty percent of my pain.
I couldn’t hold back my tears when she started patting my back
I was weeping loudly, like a child.
I wanted to stop but I couldn’t help it… I don’t know what she was doing to me
I guess I hadn’t really gone through everything I was feeling before this moment.
The door opened and two men…. well, a younger man and an older one.
“How is she?” the younger one asked
“Are you okay?” he said as he reached for my face, with pain in his eyes
I didn’t even know when I let his hand touch my face because my first instinct was to shrug.
 I mean, I don’t know he is.
“I think she’s still quite shaken, she hasn’t been able to say much”
 The older lady said
“Let me pour you a glass of water”
“Here” he said, handing me the glass.
I wiped the tears left in my eyes as I lifted the glass to my lips.
Sitting beside me, the younger man said “I’m Jeremy Kinston.”
“Robert…” he said gesturing towards the older man
“….. and I were lucky to be on our way home last night when we heard your voice”
I bent my head, and another set of tears began gathering in my eyes
“I’m so sorry, did I speak too soon?”
I tried to speak but I still couldn’t feel my tongue.
Why can’t I feel my tongue now?
I shook my head vigorously to let him know that it was his words that caused my tears.
 “Okay. We…” He continued
“Uhm, Jeremy dear. Maybe we should still give her some time to rest”
The older woman cut him off
“Let’s not bombard her with so much information just yet.”
 “Ahh, you’re right” He responded
“This is Mrs. Violet, our housekeeper. Please, let her, me, or Robert know if you need anything.”
 I nodded.
 “Come now, darling. Lay down”
I don’t know what it was about her but her voice was so nurturing.
It was easily difficult to resist her.
“I’ll come have a look at your bruise later, and change the band-aid”
I didn’t mean to shudder when she touched the bruised area
“Poor thing” she said as she tucked the blanket around me
“You don’t have to be afraid, dear.”
“You’re safe here.” She adjusted my pillow, looked at me and made to leave the room.
I still don’t know who these people are, but I know for sure that I have never felt such genuine love from the people who knew me all my life. Much less from those who just met me and knew nothing about me.
I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
