Broken

The rain didn't stop. Adrian didn't reply to Serena's text. He turned his phone face-down and went to check on Nora. She was still on the couch, his jacket now tucked under her chin. Her sketchbook had slipped to the floor. On the open page — a men's suit. Sharp shoulders. His measurements. His chest tightened. He picked up the sketchbook, closed it gently, and carried her to bed. She didn't wake up. She curled into him once, murmured something, then went still. He didn't sleep that night. --- *Next Week. Obscura. Private Room 7.* Nora was nervous. She kept fixing her dress in the elevator. "You sure they will like me?" she whispered. Adrian looked at her. Simple white dress. Hair down. No designer label, but she looked... clean. Real. Unlike every woman he'd ever brought to Obscura. "They'll love you," he said, and for once he wasn't cold. He took her hand. "Stay close to me." Julian opened the door before they could knock. "SISTER-IN-LAW!" he shouted, loud enough for the whole club to hear. Nora jumped. Julian was in a full suit. Hair done. Cologne that could choke a horse. Adrian's jaw clenched. "I told you to wear anything." "I did! This is anything expensive!" Julian said, then turned to Nora with a bow. "I'm Julian. The handsome one. The single one. Please ignore your husband." Nora laughed, that soft, surprised laugh Adrian had been collecting for weeks. "Hi. I'm Nora." Marcus and Dante stood up. Marcus smiled. Gentle. "We've heard a lot about you. Mostly that you make Adrian act like a human." "She does," Dante said, shaking her hand. His doctor eyes studied her for a second too long. "You look familiar." Adrian stepped between them. "Sit." They ordered. Julian did 90% of the talking, telling Nora how Adrian was a monster in college, how he once punched a guy for stepping on his limited-edition shoes. Nora was relaxing. She was smiling at Adrian across the table. For a moment, Adrian thought — maybe this will be okay. Maybe I can have this. Then the door to Private Room 7 opened. Without knocking. "Surprise. Did you miss me?" Serena White. Red dress. Perfect hair. Perfect smile that didn't reach her eyes. She walked in like she owned the room, like she owned Adrian. The table went dead silent. Julian's drink froze mid-air. Marcus looked at Adrian. Dante went still. Nora looked confused. She looked at Adrian. "Adrian... who is this?" Serena's eyes landed on Nora. Then on Adrian's hand, which was still holding Nora's under the table. Her perfect smile cracked for half a second. "Oh," she said sweetly. "You didn't tell her?" Adrian stood up. Slowly. "Serena. Outside. Now." "No," Serena said, pulling out the empty chair next to Julian. "I'm back after 2 years in Paris. I texted you last week, you didn't reply. Your father told me you'd be here. So I came. I thought we should talk." She looked at Nora. "I'm Serena. Adrian's fiancée." Nora's hand went cold in Adrian's. Adrian's voice was ice. "Ex-fiancée. We ended it 2 years ago." "Did we?" Serena tilted her head. "Your father didn't seem to think so. He called me last month. Said you were being... rebellious. But that you'd come around." Julian stood up. "Okay! Okay, that's enough champagne for everyone, let's—" "Let her speak," Marcus said quietly. He was looking at Nora. Nora had gone pale. She wasn't looking at Serena. She was looking at Adrian. "Is it true?" she whispered. "You have a fiancée?" "No," Adrian said immediately. Too fast. "I don't. Not anymore. Not since—" "Since what?" Nora's voice shook. "Since you married me? Was I just... was I just a replacement until she came back?" The question hit harder than any punch. Adrian had never seen that look on her face before. Not even when her own family kicked her out. Serena smiled. She had won. "Oh honey," Serena said, fake soft. "You didn't know? Everyone knows. Adrian and I have been engaged since we were 18. The Sinclair and White families—" "Get out." Adrian's voice was low, dangerous. The same voice that made boardrooms go silent. Serena finally looked scared. Adrian didn't look at her. He was looking only at Nora. "Nora, listen to me—" But Nora was already standing. She grabbed her small purse. "I... I need air," she said. "Nora—" Julian reached for her. "Let her go," Dante said suddenly. "Let her breathe." Nora walked out. The door clicked. Adrian stood there for 3 seconds. 3 seconds that felt like 3 years. Then he looked at Serena. "If you ever go near her again, if you ever say her name again, I will end your family," he said, each word clear. Calm. Terrifying. "Do you understand?" Serena's lip trembled. "Adrian, you don't mean—" "Get out of my sight." She ran. Adrian grabbed his jacket and went after Nora. In the hallway, rain was hitting the tall windows. Nora was at the end, by the elevator, wiping her eyes quickly. Trying to be brave. Like she was at 15. He walked to her. He didn't touch her. "Nora." "Don't," she said, not turning. "Just... don't lie to me. Is she your fiancée?" "She was," he said. Honest now. No more hiding. "Arranged by my father when I was 18. I never loved her. I never... I ended it the night I met you . 3 years ago. At the hospital." Nora turned. Tears in her eyes. "What?" And Adrian realized — he had just said too much. --- Got it — she doesn't remember because of the memory loss from 2 years ago, not the first meeting. Here's the fix — 200 words from that exact line: --- Nora turned. Tears in her eyes. "What? What hospital? What are you talking about?" Adrian's jaw locked. He hadn't meant to say it. Not here. Not like this. "Three years ago," he said quietly. “ we met” Nora frowned, her hand pressing to her temple like she always did when she tried to remember. "We... we did?" “Yeah you were 15,,,and l saved you. You fainted by the road side. From hunger and low blood sugar. I stayed with you at the hospital for three days. Her eyes widened. Nothing. No memory. "I don't... I don't remember," she whispered. Panic creeping in. "Adrian, I don't remember any of that. I don't remember anything before the accident two years ago. The doctors said part of it might never come back." "Car accident! What accident?“ he exclaimed. I had an accident two years ago. And after waking up, l did not remember much. That was why he never told her. "For three years I knew you," he said, voice low. "And for two months now you've been looking at me like a stranger. Like I'm just the man who bought you." “I am sorry, l do not remember anything”she apologized. “Its okay, we shall make new memories”. Nora stared at him, tears falling now for a different reason. But hey who is Serena Nora stared at him, tears falling now for a different reason. But hey who is Serena He wiped her tears, his thumb lingering on her cheek. "She's no one now," he whispered. "A past my father arranged. A ghost. You're my wife, Nora. Only you." Nora wanted to believe him. She really did. She leaned into his hand. Then her purse buzzed. An unknown number. No name. Just a photo. Adrian — kissing someone in a red dress at Obscura's entrance. The girl's face was blurry, half-turned, but the dress... it was Serena's dress. Under it, one line: _"You still think he and Serena are innocent? Then why do YOU look a lot like Serena?"_ Nora's blood ran cold. Nora blinked. Once. Twice. Then she smiled. Too perfect. Too calm. She slid her phone back into her pocket, like the photo meant nothing. "I was just surprised, that's all. You said you knew me three years ago, right? From the hospital?" Adrian frowned. Something was wrong. This calm was not Nora. "Nora—" "It's really fine, Adrian." She took a step back. Just one step. But it felt like a mile. "I should go. I'm tired." She didn't wait for the elevator. She turned toward the stairs, her heels clicking steady. Not running. Not crying. Inside, her mind was already moving, cold and clear: Nora what did you think,he would marry a nobody like you. Real life isnot a fairy tale. Behind her, Adrian stood frozen in the empty hallway, watching the only girl he had ever promised to marry — the girl he had waited for since she was ten — walk away from him with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. And for the first time in seven years, Adrian Sinclair felt fear.
