Chapter 3

657 Words
When I woke up again, the morning light flooded the room. Yet, my mood felt particularly heavy. I shifted a bit, but my lower body had no sensation. Probably from the anesthesia, I thought. Before I could process everything that had happened over the past few days, my sister, Flavia, rushed in, looking panicked and hurt. Seeing someone so close to me caught me off guard, and all the grievances I had been holding in burst forth at once. Tears filled my eyes, and I thought she had come to check on me. I was about to smile and reassure her that I was okay. But the next moment, her harsh words cut through my heart like needles. "Harvey, how could you look down on James? After being president for so many years, have you forgotten that you're just a pawn of the Sinclair family?" she shouted. "Now that James failed, are you satisfied?" The smile on my face instantly froze. It dawned on me that she had come to vent her anger over James. I realized that, as president, I was only a temporary placeholder. I could step down at any moment if she wanted me to. I had never intended to scheme for anything in the Sinclair family. But now, my sister, who had been my only companion for over a decade, was using the cruelest words to take revenge on me for a fickle man. I had always known that Flavia had a crush on someone. At that time, she had just lost a loved one and was extremely unsettled. I was so busy at the company during the day that I couldn't pay her much attention. That person had entered her life during her darkest moments. In her words, that boy was sunny, handsome, kind, and would actively cheer her up. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before he went abroad. Flavia's infatuation ended without resolution, but she always kept him in her heart. I never would have guessed that person was James. Even more shocking was that she would turn against me for him. I struggled to accept this and clung to my last hope to explain. "Flavia, I didn't do it. That day, I was at—" But before I could finish with "the hospital," Flavia interrupted me, impatience etched across her face. She looked at me with disgust as if I were nothing but filth, and all her reliance on me seemed to vanish. "Stop making excuses. Do you think James would accuse you without a reason?" "I knew people like you. An illegitimate child is still better than an orphan like you. How dare you look down on him?" "I warn you, you'd better apologize to him quickly, or let's see how long the Sinclair family can tolerate you." I never knew words could be such powerful weapons, tearing my already wounded heart apart. 'They truly love James!' They would rather believe his unfounded accusations than hear my side of the story. 'But why do I have to endure all of this?'  I can't comprehend what I did wrong to deserve such treatment from them. A surge of anger rose in my chest, nearly overwhelming me. I struggled to catch my breath, leaning over the bed and coughing until it felt like my heart was being torn apart. For a brief moment, I saw concern flash in Flavia's eyes, but it quickly faded, replaced by impatience. "Stop pretending. I'm telling you, there's no room for negotiation here! "If you did something wrong, you should apologize. Isn't that what you taught me? You have to do it, right? "I'm giving you three days. If you don't apologize, I'll never recognize you as my brother again. It's up to you." With that, she turned and walked away without a second thought. I stared at the doorway, my eyes strained until tears began to fall. This is yet another time I've been abandoned.
