Chapter 6 The Last Six Months

As soon as she says this, her phone starts ringing; she ignores it, then a message pops-up from Lexi. I know where you are, and he will soon. Please be careful and get respelled. I love you. Damon feels you tense the moment the phone buzzes. He's already reading the message over your shoulder, his body going rigid against yours. His voice becomes sharp, all tenderness evaporating. "Lexi knows where we are, which means Klaus will know soon. If he doesn't already." He pulls away from her and stands abruptly in the tub. Water cascades off him as he grabs a towel. His jaw clenches as she moves toward the bathroom door, his protective instinct overriding everything else. "Get out of the tub. Now. We need to move-get to Bonnie before sunrise. No more time, babe; we've got to go now." Evie looks at his retreating form and asks, "Do you really think it's that bad that it can't wait until morning? He can't teleport anything. It would take him time to get here." Damon moves to the window as he responds, "Klaus doesn't wait, Evie. He doesn't do patience. He will find a way here faster than you can imagine." He peers out into the darkness beyond the cabin. His jaw tightens as he continues. "Lexi wouldn't send that warning unless it was urgent and if she knows where you are". His phone buzzes. A text from Stefan: Klaus spotted near the perimeter. He's looking for something-or someone...Damon turns back and says, "Yeah, it's that bad now... go get dressed. I'm calling Stefan and Bonnie. " We're doing this tonight, no arguments…" He says as he walks out of the bathroom, towel hung low on his waist, reaching for his clothes as she rises from the bath. She says with a worried look on her face as she rises from the bath. "Oh f**k okay, you win, let's go." Damon is already moving, pulling on his clothes with vampire speed. He throws her things toward her as he says, "Five minutes. That's all we have, Stefan, we’re moving now. Klaus is closing in-Lexi just warned us. Get Bonnie to the grill, somewhere public where he wont risk exposure." He says into the phone as he walks down the stairs, Evie following close behind. Stefan's voice comes through, calm but urgent. "We’re already on it. Caroline and Bonnie are heading there now. How far out are you?" Damon grabs the keys as they walk outside; the forest has gone unnaturally quiet. No crickets. No night sounds. Just the weight of predatory attention pressing against the cabin, as he says: Fifteen minutes if we push it. She says, "I need to put up some barriers that will let him know I'm here, but he won't be able to reach me, and it'll buy us some time." She moves into the living room, grounding herself. The cosmic energy pulses through her fingertips as she begins to weave the barriers-ancient, invisible walls that shimmer with power only supernaturals can sense. Damon watches from the doorway, understanding the cost of what she's doing, as he says quietly. "He'll know you're here the second those barriers go up." His voice isn't a question. It's acceptance. He moves closer, his hand finding the small of her back. "But he won't touch you. Not tonight. Then, tomorrow we have to leave and get you out of here pronto before he knows it." Outside, a distant sound and engine cutting through the forest. Klaus is coming. Fast. She looks up at him as the barrier clicks into place and says, "It's the only way we can get out. It will confuse him, and he will think I'm inside, but we'll be gone. It's only gonna hold for 45 minutes to an hour without my presence." The barriers shimmer into existence-a dome of cosmic energy that pulses with her power. The entire cabin glows faintly as they get up, already moving towards the door. He comments, "Perfect. Let's go now!" He grabs the keys he was heading for earlier, his movements sharp and efficient. Outside, headlights cut through the darkness-not Klaus yet, but close. Pulling her toward the bike he climbs on, she does the same; their movements are becoming in-sync with each passing moment. Klaus's voice cuts through the cold air dripping with rage as he says, "I know you're in there." Damon says, "Move, now." Around the back side of the cabin, he pushes the bike down the hill without starting it so he doesn't hear them leaving as Klaus tries to break the magic. She whispers into his ear, "We have to hurry. I need to hide any trace of my essence before she changes it. Or he will figure it out." Damon makes sure everything is secured before he starts the engine at the bottom of the hill. He takes off as fast as the bike will go, weaving through the tree-lined pathways as the bike roars to life beneath them. Klaus's voice tears through the forest again, a primal, possessive howl that shakes the trees. Klaus yells as he approaches the cabin. "You can't hide from me anymore. I've found you this time, Evelyn, and you're going to be mine!!!" The barriers flare brilliant white as Klaus hurls himself against them; they barely hold as Damon guns the throttle and tears down the forest road toward town. She worries they won't get away this time. But Damon's grip tightens, his hand moves to hers, wrapped around his waist, shouting over the engine. "Forty-five minutes, Evie. We make it to Bonnie in forty minutes, you're free of him." She trembles behind his yelling if it works, this was way too close. "Bryon had to have signaled him before I killed him." The bike screams through the darkness, trees blurring past. Damon's mind is already working through the implications. His voice is tight but strong as he yells over the roar of the engine. "Yeah, Bryon had to have called Klaus or texted him the moment he found you. That's how Klaus knew where to look; that makes perfect sense. Which means Klaus has been tracking you longer than we thought. He didn't just stumble onto Mystic Falls." His hands grip tighter, protective and possessive; the town lights appear ahead, the grill glowing warmly in the distance. Stefan's car is already parked outside, engine running. He was just stepping out when they pull up. They made it in 35 minutes. Caroline gets out of the back and says urgently. "Bonnie's inside. She's already preparing the spell components. How much time do we have?" Dismounting the bike and pulling her supplies out of the saddlebags, Evie answers, "forty-five minutes, maybe less. Klaus is at the cabin tearing through my barriers. Oh, my, here in the bag, give it to Bonnie." "She will know what to do. We need well-water." Caroline takes the bags from her, walking-away, calling back she says, “Bonnie, she's got everything! We're good." Inside, Bonnie stands at the corner table surrounded by candles, crystals, and handwritten notes. Her witch's energy crackles in the air as Caroline dumps the contents of her bag before her. Bonnie looks up, eyes sharp as she says to Caroline, "Well-water. Of course, she'd know." She moves with practiced efficiency, already reaching for a ceramic bowl, when she asks Damon, "Get Evie to the back room. Now. Stefan, lock the doors, all of them." Her fingers begin tracing symbols in the air, her magic responding, and she shines like a star with light of pure bliss as she pushes it into the spell. The spell detonates outward in a blinding flash of white light; what looks like crystals shatter across the ceiling and fall onto Evie. Everyone hits the floor like a hammer, the impact rattling glasses behind the bar. When the light fades, Evie's...different. Her essence has been rewritten, hidden beneath layers of rain-soaked magic. Where fire once burned around her, there's only the cool, clean scent of a thunderstorm. Bonnie stands, steadying herself against a chair, exhaustion evident in her features as she sighs and says. "It's done. Your signature is gone. Klaus won't be able to track you by scent or magic anymore. But Evie...the spell I just cast? Its not permanent. You have six months before it needs renewal. The next witch who does it...they'll need to know you intimately. Blood magic. It has to be someone who understands your true essence." She glances at Damon, hoping he understands what she is saying. This isn't going to be easy on either of them. Evie asks, "You mean I have to either sleep with them or give them my blood. That's what you're telling me, isn't it? Not that I have much of a choice in the matter, really." Then she says, "Blood magic requires intimacy, emotional or physical connection. It's not just about the ritual. Whoever renews your spell has to understand who you are at your core. They have to know you, or you could kill Klaus or find another way to hide it. It's going to take a lot of magic. I couldn't do it. You might need a whole coven." Stefan steps up and reiterates, "So in six months, you'll need to find someone willing to do that. Someone you trust or..." Damon steps forward as well, his jaw clenched. He moves to her side, his hand finding hers. His voice low, possessive. "Six months is a long time. A lot can change. We will do whatever we have to, but her body stays mine". His fingers intertwine with hers, and there's something unmistakably territorial in the gesture a silent statement to everyone in the room as he continues. "That's a problem for later. Right now, Klaus can't find you. That's what matters." Evie tightens her grip on his hand and looks into his eyes with a clear and undeniable understanding when she says to him. "This is my last six months...that's what she's really saying, isn't it? Asking Bonnie, "Finding someone we trust with that much power, it's not likely…" The room goes silent. The weight of what Bonnie just said settles over everyone like a funeral shroud. As Bonnie states, meeting her eyes, her voice is steady but soft. "The spell cast tonight is a temporary measure. A band-aid. In six months, when it expires, Klaus will be able to track you again, and if you don't renew it, she pauses, choosing her words carefully. Evie, you know what he wants. Your blood. Your power. He won't stop hunting you." Damon's hand tightens around hers, his entire body tensing. He turns to face Evie fully, his dark eyes blazing with something raw and desperate as he says, his voice rough. "I know six months isn't forever. But we'll figure this out. We will find another way. We have to." But even he doesn't sound convinced as Evie grips his cheek and says, "I don't think that there is one that keeps me human and alive, but maybe there's another way I don't know of…" Caroline says to both of them, her powers of premonition starting to tingle. "Wait. There has to be something. Evie, you said you're a conductor of cosmic energy. That's not normal witch magic or vampire power. That's something else entirely." She looks toward Bonnie, then back to Evie and continues. "What if the answer isn't about renewing a spell at all? What if it's about understanding what you actually are?" Damon's grip on her hand loosens slightly, his mind already racing through possibilities. He says quietly. "She's right. You're not like anything we've encountered before. Maybe Klaus's obsession isn't just about your blood." Stefan steps forward, his calm voice cutting through the tension. "There are old texts. Grimoires that predate even our oldest records. If you're something ancient.." Evie looks around at the group, all full of hope now, and she says, "But I'm not.. I remember being young and growing up. I was born in 1970, not the 1700s. I am just human with extra abilities. I'm not immortal." The realization hits everyone like a brick, but then Bonnie looks up with her voice quiet and says what they were all thinking now. "You're aging. In six months, you'll be fifty-six. In twelve, fifty-seven. You're human. Human. Which means Klaus cant turn you into a hybrid because you're not supernatural enough. But your blood still conducts cosmic energy, and that's what he wants." The cruel mathematics of it. The understanding is undefinable, and they all know it. She's slowing down and eventually..
