Episode 4: The Deal with the Devil

1287 Words
Elena faced Adrian across a high-rise office of Sinclair Enterprises which was dimly lit while she clung to the contract edges like her only anchor to the present. The burden of her choice became heavy enough to compress her chest. She placed her signature on the page which linked her to a stranger even though he operated from a world based on power, wealth and unbridled ambition. She found herself in an irreversible situation. Adrian remained composed as he observed her through his grey eyes in a distant manner. His authority radiated through the room as he stood there. She drew a deep breath while making herself look directly at him. “So… that’s it? We’re engaged now?” She gave the contract a second glance, this time focusing on the words that would determine her fate: No emotions. No expectations. Merely a commercial arrangement. The concept of marriage was stripped of all meaning as it was spelt out in cold, impersonal language. There were clauses about public appearances, social obligations, and confidentiality agreements—but nothing about companionship, nothing about trust. This was not a romance novel. It was a deal with the devil. The Rules of Their Marriage Adrian reclined in his chair while folding his hands in front of him. The following information needs to be understood because we will share the same residence. Elena braced herself. The first rule of our arrangement is to uphold a public façade according to him. The requirement for public life demands you join social occasions alongside each other and present a devoted couple front. My family must believe we have a genuine marriage which exists in reality. She gave a slow nod. “And in private?” His expression remained unreadable. “We live separate lives. You will have your own room. You must give me the same level of respect because I intend to keep my distance from your personal matters. Her stomach twisted. This development brought both comfort and discomfort to my mind. Adrian continued. Your financial requirements will have full coverage through established accounts. Access to personal expense funds will be provided through a new account that the marriage will establish under your name. Any uncontrolled spending combined with unwanted attention toward others will be strictly forbidden. Elena’s jaw tightened. "I am not a gold prospector." He raised one eyebrow. “Good. Let’s keep it that way.” She suppressed her angry words as heat surfaced on her face. The marriage will last exactly one year before it ends according to Adrian. No exceptions. No renegotiations.” Twelve months. One year of pretending. The next twelve months of my life would require nothing more than playing the role of Elena Sinclair. She swallowed hard. "Then after that?" His face tightened as his lips formed a straight line. According to our arrangement, you will leave without any complications. A mysterious discomfort started inside her chest without any explanation. She should be relieved. This was temporary. Just a means to an end. Why did it seem she had made a mistake that she couldn't repair despite the situation involving temporary arrangements? A Life of Luxury A shiny black vehicle showed up outside Elena's small apartment during the morning. She stood on the sidewalk next to her suitcase while gazing at the expensive car which seemed foreign to her existence. Because it didn’t. The driver emerged from the car wearing a well-pressed suit while greeting her with a respectful expression. Mrs. Carter? She hesitated before nodding back. “This way, please.” The feeling of discomfort grew inside her body while she took her seat in the luxurious leather seat. She was stepping into an environment where money and authority controlled all aspects while abandoning her tiny disorganized living space and simple life of daily challenges. Adrian Sinclair maintained total control over a domain which he ruled through forceful domination. Elena briefly lost her breath upon seeing Adrian's estate for the first time. The mansion behind its iron barrier presented itself as an expansive estate that combined glass and steel materials. The majestic estate displayed abundance and dominion as it announced the wealthy owner who resided there. The driver’s opening of the door revealed the enormous dimensions of the place which surprised her. The front doors of the mansion opened up just as she completed her assessment of the grand estate. From the doorway, Adrian watched her approach while wearing a perfectly tailored suit with an expression that revealed nothing. “Welcome,” he said simply. The woman pushed herself to keep walking ahead while pulling her suitcase during her progress. The wide-eyed student entered the building. The interior space featured remarkable high ceilings together with marble floors and expensive wall-mounted artwork. The place exudes luxury everywhere, but it was cold. Impersonal. Similar to its owner. Adrian’s voice pulled her from her thoughts. “Your room is upstairs. Second door on the left.” She turned to him. “You mean we’re not…?” His gaze remained fixed. “As I said, we live separate lives.” Relief coursed through her. “Good. He interrupted her with, "I don't blend business with personal interests", as his statement came across in a professional manner. She did not understand why these words cut into her. She lifted her chin. The issue we face will disappear if such scenarios no longer exist. His facial expression showed light amusement for some reason. “No, we won’t.” A tense moment developed between them while standing there without expression. Finally, Adrian turned away. “Dinner is at seven. Be ready.” After delivering his response Adrian simply left through the doors of his dominant lifestyle. During that moment Elena remained uncertain about whether she made a settlement which would torment her throughout her remaining life. Dinner with a Stranger When night fell Elena made her way down the stairs while feeling uncomfortable wearing the luxurious gown that had been provided in her chamber. Adrian occupied the dining table by himself when she entered while sipping wine from a glass. The man continued to focus on his work without glancing at Elena when she arrived in his presence. “You’re late,” he remarked. The woman placed herself opposite him while raising one of her eyebrows. “By two minutes.” Another slight movement appeared on his lips before he stayed silent. A servant brought wine to her which she watched before eventually sipping it. Adrian finally looked at her. “Tomorrow, we’ll go public with the engagement.” Her stomach tightened. “Meaning?” An announcement to the press Photos. A dinner with my parents.” She nearly choked on her wine. “Your parents?” His expression darkened slightly. “They expect to meet you. We need to be convincing.” Elena swallowed hard. She had agreed to this marriage, but she hadn’t fully processed what it meant to step into his world—to face people who would see right through her. People who would want her gone. Adrian’s voice softened slightly, though his tone was still firm. I will not permit them to ruin this deal. She studied him. This deal. Not us. Not this marriage. Just another business transaction. She should be relieved. Instead, she felt an uneasy twist in her chest. She had signed up for a marriage in name only. But as she sat across from the man she would soon call her husband, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had walked into something far more dangerous than she had ever anticipated. Because Adrian Sinclair wasn’t just any man. He was powerful. Ruthless. And utterly indestructible. And somehow, she had just tied herself to him.
