Chapter 9: Total Panic

1083 Words
Fear is a fire that burns hottest when it consumes a partnership built on lies. The penthouse office of the Vance Group was completely dark except for the harsh blue light of Chloe’s laptop screen. Papers were scattered across the mahogany desk, and the air was thick with tension. Chloe paced back and forth, her fingers digging into her palms so hard her nails nearly pierced her skin. "What do you mean the land registry is blank?" Marcus shouted, slamming his fist onto the desk as he walked into the room. His shirt was torn at the collar, and a dark bruise was already forming under his left eye. "Look at the screen yourself," Chloe hissed, pointing a trembling finger at the monitor. "The commercial land rights we took from Ethan yesterday are gone. They never arrived in my personal holding account. The state registry says the title was routed directly into something called Nemesis Holdings." "Nemesis Holdings?" Marcus repeated, his voice cracking as he leaned over the desk. "That is the exact same ghost corporation that bought my debt from Mr. Chang’s casino. Who is running this company?" "I was going to ask you the same thing," Chloe said, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she stepped closer to him. "You are the one who lost five million dollars of our slush fund at that roulette wheel, Marcus. Now suddenly, some mysterious company buys your debt and steals my land rights at the exact same time? Did you cut a secret deal to save your own skin?" "Are you losing your mind?" Marcus roared, defending himself aggressively. "I was locked in a basement by thugs, Chloe. Look at my face. They practically broke my jaw before that transfer cleared. I did not cut any deal. You are the one who hired that corrupt lawyer, Julian. Maybe he decided twenty percent was not enough and stole the land for himself." "Julian is terrified of me," Chloe snapped back, her voice rising to a screech. "He would never have the guts to double cross us. Someone else is inside our network. Someone knows exactly what we are doing." "Well, they are not just inside the network," Marcus muttered, looking out the glass window toward the street below. "Two black SUVs have been following me since I left the casino. When I tried to park in the basement just now, three men in heavy coats blocked the ramp. They told me that Nemesis Holdings expects their first interest payment by midnight tonight. Twelve million dollars, Chloe. Where am I supposed to get that kind of cash?" "Do not look at me," Chloe said, turning her back on him completely. "The main corporate accounts are completely locked down for the pre merger audit. If I pull out one more dollar before Friday morning, the board members will call the federal investigators. I am not going to jail for your gambling debts, Marcus." "Oh, so now it is my debt?" Marcus laughed bitterly, grabbing her shoulder and spinning her back around to face him. "We are partners, Chloe. We planned the car crash together. We split the assets together. If I go down, I am dragging you straight to the bottom with me. Do not forget who drove that SUV." "Take your hands off me," Chloe whispered, her voice dripping with pure venom. "You are a reckless i***t, Marcus. You ruined the perfect plan because you could not keep away from the casino table. If Ethan were still in that hospital bed, we would not be in this mess." "Ethan is gone," Marcus muttered, his breathing heavy as he let go of her shirt. "The police still have no idea where his body went after the fire. What if he is not dead, Chloe? What if he survived the flames and he is the one doing this?" "Do not be ridiculous," Chloe scoffed, though a visible shiver ran down her spine. "The doctor said his life support was cut off before the fire even reached the room. He was a vegetable. He could not even lift his thumb without my help. A brain dead man does not build a multi million dollar shadow corporation overnight." "Then who is it?" Marcus pleaded, his voice filled with raw panic as he checked his watch. "It is eleven o'clock. We have one hour before those loan sharks come up that elevator to collect." "We proceed with the merger," Chloe said, hardening her expression as she closed the laptop. "Once the Vance Group merges with Thorne Logistics tomorrow morning, we will have legal access to the combined capital reserves. We can pay off your debt, bury the land registry discrepancy, and leave the country before anyone realizes the files were altered." "And what if this Nemesis company strikes again before the morning?" Marcus asked. "They can not," Chloe said coldly. "The merger documents are hard copies. Sarah is gone, the minor board members are paid off, and the signing ceremony is being broadcast live to the media. There is nothing anyone can do to stop it." Marcus let out a long, shaky breath, trying to calm the pounding in his chest. He pulled his phone from his coat pocket to check the time again. The screen suddenly flashed with an incoming message notification from an unknown, restricted number. There was no text, just a single, uncompressed video file attachment. "What is that?" Chloe asked, noticing the pale expression returning to his face. Marcus clicked the file. The video player opened, displaying a high definition, low angle view of a sterile white room. It was Ethan’s old VIP suite at the medical center. The timestamp at the bottom of the screen showed the exact date and time from earlier that week. On the screen, Marcus’s own digital likeness appeared, leaning over Ethan's comatose face while holding a lit cigar, his voice coming through the phone's speaker with absolute, crystal clear audio quality. "That car crash was no accident at all, but a trap orchestrated by his wife and her lover to get rid of him," Marcus's recorded voice bragged loudly on the video, detailing every single element of the murder plot while Chloe laughed in the background. Marcus drops the phone onto the carpet, his hands shaking violently as the video continues to play on loop. Marcus receives a video file on his phone showing a hidden camera angle of the exact moment he plotted Ethan's murder in the hospital room.
