CHAPTER 3

Long shadows painted the sky in deep tones of scarlet and violet as the sun dropped behind the mountains, extending across the castle courtyard. The cool evening breeze did little to slow Aurora's racing heart. Once a peaceful space, the courtyard had been turned into an arena, a testing ground for those who were bold or stupid enough to compete for the throne. The entire kingdom was watching as the "Rite of Succession" got ready to start. Aurora stood at the edge of the crowd, her fingers trembling despite her best efforts to steady them. She could feel the stares—sneers from some, curiosity from others. Most of the gathered Alphas didn’t bother hiding their disbelief, openly dismissing her presence. She could almost hear their thoughts: The princess? Competing? What a joke. But she had made her choice, and now there was no going back. Her brothers were already at the front, commanding attention like the born warriors they were. Aldric, with his towering frame and chiseled features, looked every bit the fearsome Alpha. His black cloak billowed behind him, the insignia of their house—two wolves locked in battle—emblazoned on his chest. Gareth, always the more cunning of the two, wore a confident smirk, his sharp eyes darting between the gathered contenders, already sizing up his competition. Aurora, standing smaller in stature and frame, felt like an imposter among them. Yet, the fire within her refused to be extinguished. She would prove them wrong. “You’re late.” The voice startled her, but when she turned, Marcus stood by her side, his face set in a neutral expression. He handed her a thin leather strap. “To keep your hair back,” he explained gruffly, though his tone lacked the warmth of concern. More like practicality. Aurora took the strap with a nod, tying her blonde hair back into a tight braid. “What’s the first trial?” “The Trial of Endurance,” Marcus said, his voice low. “It’s designed to push the contestants to their limits. You’ll be expected to outlast your competitors. Physical, mental, and magical stamina. It’s not just a race. It’s a battle of survival.” She swallowed hard. “And the others?” Marcus remarked, "They've been preparing for this their entire lives." "However, you possess something that they do not." “What’s that?” Marcus gave her a rare, small smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You have more to lose. The question is: will you fight to protect it?” Before Aurora could respond, the sound of a deep horn echoed through the courtyard. The Elders had arrived. At the center of the courtyard, a raised dais stood, and upon it, the Elders—five wizened werewolves—took their seats. Each wore robes of dark silver, and their faces were impassive, their eyes sharp and unforgiving. The gathered contenders all fell silent as one of the Elders, an ancient woman with long silver hair, rose to speak. “Welcome, Alphas,” her voice carried easily across the courtyard, a quiet authority lacing every word. “You have gathered here to prove your worth. To claim the throne and lead this kingdom. But only the strongest among you will survive the Rite. And only one will rule.” She paused, allowing her gaze to sweep over the assembled wolves. “The first trial will be a test of endurance—both physical and magical. Those who fall behind, those who falter, will be eliminated. You must step outside of your comfort zone if you wish to survive. Your route will lead you far into the wilderness, and the trail has been marked out. In addition to one another, you will also have to deal with the weather, your personal shortcomings, and your own worries. Only the strongest will return.” A chill went through Aurora's body. Although she hadn't anticipated the trial starting so quickly, she figured there was little use in postponing the inevitable. She would be killed if she hesitated, and the competition was intense. A big stone gate at the far end of the courtyard creaked open as the Elder held out her hand. Past it, the trail extended into the thick woodland, the undergrowth gloomy and unwelcoming. The Trial of Endurance had begun. As soon as the gate fully opened, the Alphas surged forward. Aurora felt her body tense, but she forced herself to move. This was it. She was truly in the Rite now. The noises from the palace and courtyard soon vanished as the forest engulfed them. The aged and twisted trees towered above, their branches obstructing the majority of the moonlight. She had to keep her wits about her since the ground beneath her feet was dangerous and uneven. The air was pungent with the smell of earth and pine, and she breathed rapidly. Already, some of the Alphas had begun to pull ahead, their superior strength and speed carrying them far beyond her. Aldric was among them, his powerful stride breaking through the thick foliage with ease. Not far behind, Gareth's slender figure moved between the trees like a shadow. Aurora refused to slow down even though her muscles were screaming with each stride and her heart was thumping in her chest. The air around her was filled with the growls and pants of wolves. Even though the trial was barely getting started, the cruelty of the Rite was already becoming apparent. Some of the weaker contestants were struggling to keep pace, their bodies not yet conditioned for the gruelling challenge ahead. Aurora's gaze darted ahead as she ducked under a low-hanging branch. She had to avoid falling behind. The air was suddenly filled with a warning wail. When a huge clawed paw swiped at her from the side, Aurora's instincts kicked in and she managed to duck in time. She just escaped the attack before rolling to the ground. When she looked up, she saw him: Darius. In front of her, the massive Alpha stood with a savage smile on his face. His golden eyes glittered with malevolent intent, and his dark fur bristled. His voice was brimming with arrogance as he snarled, "Well, well, if it isn't the princess." "I wanted to know when you would fall behind." Aurora stumbled to her feet, her heart pounding. The hunger in Darius's eyes was visible to her. He didn't care how he did it, but he wanted her out of the competition. She snarled, trying to conceal the tremble in her voice, "Stay out of my way, Darius." Darius laughed, a deep, mocking sound. “Oh, princess, you’re out of your depth. You think you can survive this? This is no place for a delicate flower like you.” Aurora just barely avoided his attack as he pounced at her once again. She was aware that she would never be able to outrun him in these forests, where every step was a risk. She had to think of something fast. A huge wolf suddenly emerged from the brush before Darius could retaliate after hearing a deep growl resonate from the shadows. The rogue. Kael. When he struck Darius, he was a whirl of muscle and fur that knocked the bigger Alpha off his feet. As Aurora watched the two wolves struggle for supremacy, their claws ripping into one another, her heart missed a beat. Kael’s ferocity was undeniable, but Darius was no slouch. He snarled and slashed at Kael, forcing the rogue back. “Go!” Kael barked at her between snarls. "Your time is running out!" Aurora made no hesitation. She bolted through the trees, her legs burning with the effort. The sounds of the battle behind her faded as she pushed deeper into the trees. She couldn't stop, not even when her lungs were screaming for air and her body was about to collapse. She had to keep going. After what seemed like hours, the route opened up into a clearing as the trees became thinner. Gasping for air, Aurora fell to her knees and staggered forward. She had made it. For now. Half expecting Darius to charge after her, she looked over her shoulder, but all she saw was stillness. She had enough time to get away thanks to Kael, but at what price? The truth of the situation struck in as she knelt in the clearing, her heart still pounding. This was just the start. She had just evaded death before the Rite had even begun. She was fighting not only for the throne but also for her life. She also needed allies if she was to live. Powerful ones. She needed Kael.
