Ryan: “Hello? Can you speak, or are you just going to keep staring at me?”
Me: “Eliza,” I said breathier than intended.
He smiled. He liked this. It wasn’t a warm smile; it was a dark, somewhat cocky smile.
Ryan: “Do you like what you see?” He continued to smirk, his eyes impossibly dark. Was his wolf present?
Me: “I’m sorry I bumped into you; can I please go look for my friend?”
Ryan: “Who is your friend?”
Me: “Crystal. We came together; we were dancing, but now she’s not here.”
Ryan: “The blonde?”
Me: “Yes.”
Ryan: “She just went upstairs with Jason. I doubt she will be down anytime soon.”
My stomach twisted. She promised she wouldn’t leave me, and now here I am, face to face with the hottest guy in the school, who also happens to be scary as hell, alone. This can’t be happening! I am never going to another party with her again!
Ryan: “Come! Let me get you a drink.” It sounded like a command.
Ryan grabbed my hand and pulled me with force toward him as he walked toward the kitchen. I wasn’t feeling another drink at all. I wanted to find my friend and get out of here. We got to the kitchen, and he grabbed a beer this time. I was glad it wasn’t that punch stuff. That was way too strong.
Ryan: “Here you go. It looks like they killed the punch.”
Me: “I don’t mind; it was way too strong. Thank you!”
He smiled and nodded. He leaned against the counter with a smug look on his face, but the way he was looking at me didn’t help my nerves. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking, if it was good or bad.
Ryan: “Are you in the academy?”
Me: “Not yet, I will start in September. We just graduated last month.”
Ryan: “Ah. I see. I go back in September too. I will be in the advanced warrior program. What are you studying for?”
Me: “I am going for English Lit. I think I want to teach or something like that.”
He didn’t need to know my dreams and ideas. Ryan smiled at that.
Ryan: “Come with me, we can go somewhere quieter.”
Part of me was curious, another part of me was screaming “No”. I was conflicted. Why was he even talking to me? I could see girls everywhere staring and looking at him like he was a piece of meat. I didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention to myself before I even started the academy.
Me: “That’s ok, I should wait here for Crystal.”
Ryan: “I will text Jason and let him know where we are. Come on.”
With that, he grabbed my hand again and led me to a quieter area of the home. It appeared to be a library. There were so many books. As soon as he dropped my hand, my eyes were everywhere. I wanted to see all the titles, feel the spines, and get lost in this place. It was so big!
Me: “May I?” I was smiling ear to ear.
Ryan: “Sure.” He also smiled; this time it was warm and somewhat amused. “Do you like books? I assumed with your major, you might. I figured you might like this place. Was I right?”
Me: “Yes! I love books. Ever since I was little. I hope someday to have a library of my own.”
