Chapter 6

1129 Words
Eliza’s POV I was trying to get out of here as fast as I could. I could feel him staring at me as I got up fast to move. I hoped he would just let me go. Why did I come in here with him? I should have known better. Now I have to find Crystal and get the hell out of here. I got out into the hall. Thankfully, he didn’t follow. I pulled my phone out and brought up her name. I called, and she answered right away. Her voice was like she was out of breath. I had a feeling I knew why. “Hello,” she said. Me: “Crystal, where are you? I want to leave.” Crystal: “Are you ok? You sound upset.” Me: “It doesn’t matter. I just want to leave, and I don’t want to leave you here. Are you ok?” Crystal: “Oh, yes. I am headed downstairs now. Meet me by the front door.” I did just that. I found my way back to the kitchen area and knew how to get to the front door from there. Just as I was about to reach the front door, I felt him. He was right behind me. NO, I thought. Ryan: “Why did you run away?” Me: “Please leave me alone. I am leaving. I am just waiting for my friend.” Ryan: “You can’t be serious. Any woman in this room would have taken me up on my offer. Why are you any different?” His face was cold, somewhat shocked or confused; I couldn’t tell. He clearly wasn’t used to being turned down. But I wasn’t “any” girl. I was saving myself for my mate. Me: “I am not some girl. I respect myself more than that. Thank you for showing me the library. Now I have to go; I have to work tomorrow anyway.” That wasn’t entirely a lie. I did have to work, just not until 1. He didn’t argue and walked away. Just then, I saw Crystal. All the tension in my body eased up a bit at seeing her. I smiled. Crystal: “There you are. Were you talking to Ryan?” she said, a look of confusion on her face. Me: “Yes, he was just saying hi.” I didn’t want to tell her about what he said. It was too embarrassing, and she would probably scold me for not taking him up on his offer. The more embarrassing part, I was kind of disappointed in myself. He was so hot. I just couldn’t bring myself to think of being with anyone before I even knew who my mate was, if I had a mate? Granted, it could be him for all I know. However, I hoped not. While he was hot, and I was curious, there was darkness about him that made me want to run far away. He also had a horrible reputation for using women and leaving them high and dry. I didn’t intend to be one of those women. I have no idea why women throw themselves at him. I can’t remember him ever dating one. All I ever saw was them staring, smiling, and hoping to be chosen by him. I can’t imagine wanting to be used like that. We walked outside and got into my jeep. Crystal clearly had a good time. I asked her where she had been, and she just smiled and said, “You know, just having some fun." Sometimes I was jealous that she could do that so easily. We drove back home in silence. I dropped her off and headed home. As I walked through my front door, I realized Dad still wasn’t home. I guess he will be home tomorrow. I headed into the kitchen and made myself a cup of coffee. I then headed upstairs and got into some PJs. I sat in my nook and looked out the window. The forest was so pretty at night. My wolf came forward and purred. We hadn’t gone for a run in a while. Maybe now wouldn’t hurt. I stripped down to nothing, went back downstairs, and out the back door. I shifted on the porch before anyone could see me. Nudity wasn’t a big deal, but still, I preferred to be nude in front of others only when necessary. I couldn’t help but feel as though someone was watching me. It made me shiver. I ran toward the tree line and into the forest. There was a spring not far from my house, and I liked to go there sometimes to think. I felt the soft earth beneath my paws and smiled. The smells of the forest, the cool night air, and the sound of water nearby were peaceful. I made my way to the spring and settled on the ground once I was near enough to rest for a moment. I got up and jumped into the spring. It was cold and refreshing at the same time. I swam for a bit and then got back onto the bank, shaking my fur out. I would have stayed longer, but that feeling of being watched only grew stronger. I then went back to the house and shifted on the porch. I looked around one more time before heading back inside. I was definitely being paranoid. I went back inside and headed back upstairs, slipping back into my PJs. That was just what I needed. As I sat in my nook, I picked up my phone. I had a few missed messages. One from Crystal, one from Dad, and one from a number I didn’t recognize. Crystal: “Hey girl, thanks for tonight. It was a blast!” Me: “Thank you! It was fun. See you for work tomorrow.” I lied. It was definitely not a blast. Dad: “Be home tomorrow, Liza, sleep well!” Me: “Night, Dad. Love you.” Dad: “Love you too.” Unknown number: “It was nice to meet you. I will see you again soon. R” I knew exactly who that was from. My stomach did a flip. How did he get my number? I wasn’t going to answer. Was he the reason I got the creepy feeling like someone was watching me? I found myself looking out every window, pacing all over the house, and drinking two cups of coffee before I finally settled in my nook. I didn’t respond to his text. He probably had plenty of options; he didn’t need me. I picked up my book and started to read it. Before I knew it, I passed out in my nook as usual.
