CHAPTER 12: Epilogue - Spring 6 months later. Spring came to the North. The snow melted. The rivers un-froze. The fields turned green. And for the first time in 20 years, Joseon and Northern children played together by the riverbank. Seo-ah was teaching them under a big tree. "Repeat after me," she said, writing in the dirt with a stick. "Hello in Joseon is Annyeong." "Annyeong!" the kids shouted back, half Northern, half Joseon. Some of them had one Northern parent and one Joseon parent. Kadir watched from the wall and shook his head, smiling. "You’re terrible at teaching." "I’m great at teaching," Seo-ah said, hands on hips. "They learned 5 words today." Letters came every week now. From Minho. From the Joseon court. From Northern lords. No threats. No demands. Just trade agreements and marriage proposals for other houses. Peace was boring. And Seo-ah loved it. That night there was a banquet in the great hall. Not for war. Not for treaties. Just because the first crops came in and the granaries were full. Long tables. Roast meat. Rice. Northern stew. Joseon tea. Kadir stood up to give a speech. He looked different in his crown. Less like a general, more like a king. "One year ago we were enemies," he said, voice loud. "We spilled each other’s blood. Today we share bread." He lifted his cup. "To peace. To family." Everyone clapped. Even the old generals who used to hate Joseon. Even the Joseon envoys who used to call Northerners barbarians. Seo-ah stood next to him in blue and white silk. Her hair had the Joseon ribbon he gave her in winter. The one he said matched her dress. After the banquet, they walked in the garden. Lanterns were lit. "Do you regret it?" Kadir asked suddenly. "Marrying me. Ending the war this way." Seo-ah stopped by the fountain. Looked at him. "Do you regret not burning Joseon down?" Kadir laughed softly. "Every day. It would’ve been easier." "Then no," Seo-ah said. "I don’t regret any of it. Not the tent. Not the treaty. Not you." He kissed her forehead. "Good. Because I don’t regret you either." A messenger ran up. Out of breath. Boots muddy. "Your Majesties! A letter from Joseon! From the palace!" Seo-ah took it with shaking hands. Minho’s seal. Red wax. She broke it open. "Seo-ah, The King officially recognizes the treaty. It’s law now. You are no longer 'dethroned'. You are Princess of Two Kingdoms. The people like the peace. The merchants like the money. Come home for the summer festival. We’re throwing you a parade. And Kadir — you better treat her right or I will come up there myself. -M" Seo-ah read it twice. Then she cried. Not sad tears. Relief tears. Kadir wiped them with his thumb. "Happy tears?" "The best kind," she said. "He called you by name. He didn’t call you enemy." That night, they wrote back together at the same desk. Kadir dictated, Seo-ah wrote. "Brother, We’ll be there for the festival and the parade. Save me the front seat and the good rice cakes. Save some food for Kadir too. He eats a lot and complains if he’s hungry. Thank you. Love, Seo-ah & Kadir" They sealed it and sent it with the fastest bird. Outside, the border torches were lit. But not for war. For celebration. Guards from both sides stood together. Joking. Sharing drinks. Merchants set up stalls early for the festival. Children chased each other, yelling in both languages. Seo-ah leaned her head on Kadir’s shoulder. "We did it," she whispered. "We did," Kadir whispered back. "Together." And for the first time in a long time, the North was quiet. Not the quiet before a storm. The quiet after. **THE END OF BOOK 1**
