CHAPTER 9: The Duel
Day 5.
The battle stopped.
Because Minho challenged Kadir to single combat.
"One fight," Minho shouted. "Winner takes her."
The whole field went quiet.
Kadir looked at Seo-ah.
She nodded once.
They met in the middle. Snow. Blood. Two kings.
Minho attacked first. Fast. Angry.
Kadir blocked. Calm. Controlled.
Steel on steel.
"You took my sister," Minho growled.
"You abandoned her," Kadir shot back.
They circled.
"You don’t love her," Minho said.
"I would burn the world for her," Kadir replied.
Minho swung. Kadir ducked. Cut Minho’s arm.
Minho roared and came again.
Seo-ah watched. Hands shaking.
"Stop!" she screamed. "BOTH OF YOU STOP!"
Neither did.
So she stepped between them.
Both swords stopped an inch from her throat.
"Are you insane?!" Minho yelled.
"Move," Kadir said.
"No," Seo-ah said. "I choose."
She looked at Minho. Her brother. Her blood.
"I love you. But you tried to marry me off."
She looked at Kadir. The enemy. Her husband.
"I hate you. But you chose me."
She took both their hands.
"I choose NEITHER of you to choose for me."
Silence.
Then Minho lowered his sword.
"Damn you," he whispered. "You sound like Father."
Kadir also lowered his.
"What now?" he asked.
Seo-ah lifted her chin.
"Now we talk. As 3 kingdoms. Or we all die."
Day 5 of 7.
And the war paused.
