Proof in the Waiting

473 Words
Back at university, Maya threw herself into her routine again—lectures, assignments, late-night study sessions in the library. She told herself she needed the distraction, needed the distance. But Mike kept slipping through her thoughts. And then, little by little, he began slipping into her life again too. It started with simple messages— Good luck on your exam today. Have you eaten? Don’t forget. I heard this song today and it reminded me of you. Nothing pushy, nothing overwhelming. Just steady, constant proof that he was thinking of her. At first, Maya had brushed them off, replying with short answers. But soon she caught herself waiting for his texts, smiling at her phone in the middle of lectures, her heart racing whenever his name lit up her screen. --- One evening, her phone buzzed with Liam’s name. She answered, flopping back on her bed. “Hey, birthday boy,” she teased. “Don’t start,” Liam groaned. “I’m still recovering from that hangover.” Maya laughed. “So, what’s up?” “Actually, I wanted to ask you something,” he said, his tone shifting into curiosity. “What the hell did you do to Mike?” Maya blinked. “What do you mean?” “I mean,” Liam continued, “my boy has changed. Like, seriously. He’s not going out , not chasing girls, not even staying out late anymore. He’s been… I don’t know… a good boy.” She rolled her eyes, though warmth crept into her chest. “Don’t exaggerate.” “I’m not!” Liam protested. “He’s even helping his dad with work on weekends. And when I asked him why, he just shrugged. But, come on, Maya—it’s obvious. It’s you.” Her stomach fluttered, a smile tugging at her lips before she could stop it. “Don’t be ridiculous.” “I’m telling you,” Liam pressed, “you’ve turned him into a saint. So whatever ultimatum you gave him, it’s working.” Maya bit her lip, silence stretching between them for a beat. Then she sighed, her voice softer. “Maybe… maybe he really is trying.” “Oh, he is,” Liam said firmly. “And if you don’t believe me, come see for yourself.” That night, long after she hung up the call, Maya lay awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. Liam’s words echoed in her mind. The thought of Mike actually keeping his promise, actually waiting for her, chipped away at her doubts. And slowly, an idea began to form. A surprise. If Mike was really proving himself… maybe it was time she showed him that she noticed. That she cared too. For the first time in months, Maya went to sleep with excitement buzzing in her chest, her lips curved in a secret smile.
