Morning Lies

275 Words
The sunlight through the blinds was merciless. Maya blinked awake, sheets tangled around her bare legs, the taste of Mike still on her lips. Reality crashed in. She turned—Mike was already awake, arm propped under his head, watching her with a smug smile. “Morning, gorgeous.” Her throat tightened. “Mike…” “Don’t,” he interrupted, leaning over to kiss her bare shoulder. “Don’t ruin it with overthinking.” Her body shivered, but her heart hammered with panic. They had crossed a line—no going back. “Last night—” “—was the best night of my life,” he finished smoothly, smirk widening. “You?” She bit her lip, torn between confession and denial. Before she could answer, he kissed her again, slow and deep, as if he could silence her doubts. When they finally dressed and slipped out of the villa, they didn’t walk together. They didn’t even look at each other as friends called out their goodbyes. By the time Maya reached her block, her nerves were frayed. She pushed her hair back, trying to breathe. And then she saw him. Mike. Just a few steps away. Laughing. His arm slung casually around the waist of a girl with long blond hair. His ex. Maya froze. Her stomach hollowed, chest tightening until she could barely breathe. The same lips that had kissed her all night were now smiling for someone else. He looked up, caught her staring—then looked away as if nothing had happened. In that moment, Maya realized: one night could change everything… but not always the way you dreamed.
