SELINA'S POV
I couldn't sleep well the entire night. Ellaine never came home, and none of us knew where she had gone, but there was only one thing I knew for sure, she was definitely with Adrian, doing the same thing over and over again that kept hurting me.
The pain had completely drained all my strength.
I weakly walked downstairs from my room.
"Oh, Selina, sweetheart, are you still not feeling well?" Mom asked as soon as I reached the kitchen.
"I'm fine, Mom," I lied. I sat down and started eating. Mom sat beside me, smiling warmly as she looked at me.
"Tomorrow is your 18th birthday, what gift do you want? Is there anything you'd like to buy? Just tell us so your dad and I can get it for you." I paused for a moment, trying to remember the date. I hadn't even noticed how fast time had passed. So tomorrow was already my eighteenth birthday.
I had smelled my mate earlier than expected, probably because my real birthday had already passed. The birthday my parents registered for me was the day Dad found me.
"No wonder she's getting so spoiled. You keep pampering her too much. She should already be grateful that she has parents, a good life, and the chance to study. Why do you still have to give her gifts?" Mom and I both turned to Ellaine, who had just come downstairs. So she had already come home. It looked like she and Adrian had spent the whole night having s*x. Did Ellaine already know that I was Adrian's mate, was that why they kept doing this to me?
"Ellaine, Selina is still your sister because we're her parents now. What's gotten into you? Why do you hate her so much?" Ellaine rolled her eyes at Mom, grabbed a piece of bacon, and casually ate it.
"You always choose her over me, your real daughter. Don't wait until I disown both of you as my parents if you keep choosing that girl over me."
"Ellaine!" Mom shouted angrily, but Ellaine simply ignored her.
"I'm leaving for school. I don't want to arrive there with that girl."
"Your sister won't have a ride if you leave her behind."
"Who told you I was taking our car? Adrian is picking me up." She answered arrogantly before walking out of the house. Mom could only sigh and shake her head.
"Are you okay? Tell me, did you feel the pain of your mate sleeping with another woman? Is that why you're so weak right now?" Mom asked. Even if I didn't answer, I knew she already knew the truth because she knew me too well.
"If Adrian keeps hurting you, don't wait for him to reject you first. If he wants Ellaine to become his Luna, then there's nothing we can do about that, sweetheart. It's better if you reject Adrian as your mate instead of letting yourself suffer every time he sleeps with another woman. That might end up killing you." Mom said seriously. I simply smiled and nodded.
"I'll think about it, Mom. Is Dad outside already? I'll head to school now." I excused myself. I barely ate because I had no appetite.
"Be careful. Reject Adrian today, okay? I'm saying this for you, not for Ellaine. I hope you understand me. I know many girls dream of becoming a Luna, but I don't think you'll survive if your mate keeps hurting you."
"Don't worry about me, Mom. I can still handle it." I answered before kissing her on the cheek and leaving the house.
"Has Ellaine still been hurting you? Why didn't you tell me she was bullying you? When did she start treating you like this?" Dad asked one question after another.
"Dad, let's not talk about it anymore. I'm fine. I can protect myself."
"I know you can, but if they keep doing this to you, how will you have enough strength for the Mooncrest Trial? Your mom and I want you to fight so you can survive, not just so you can get into Lunaris. You're wolfless, Selina. You can't match the strength of those who already have wolves." Worry was evident in Dad's voice. I couldn't help but smile because I was so lucky to have parents who treated me kindly even though we weren't related by blood.
"Don't worry, Dad. I'll make sure I walk out of that arena alive." I answered with a smile so he wouldn't worry anymore. He only sighed and shook his head.
"You'd better." I simply nodded.
When I arrived at school, Ellaine was already there. She and Adrian were behind the building, kissing each other without caring that other students could see them. Even though my heart ached, I didn't let them see that I was hurting. Adrian would only enjoy it even more if he saw me suffering.
Go ahead, enjoy hurting me while you still can. I'll make sure today is the last day you'll ever get to do it.
I focused on all of my classes. When school ended that afternoon, I was suddenly startled when someone grabbed me. I frowned as I looked at Adrian, who was smirking at me.
"Don't you dare reject me as your mate. I'll kill you if you do." He threatened before walking away, even blowing me a flying kiss while laughing.
He didn't want me to reject him, and he wasn't rejecting me either because this was exactly what he wanted, to keep hurting me.
That night, I simply stared blankly at the ceiling of my room. I didn't know whether Ellaine had gone home or if she was with Adrian again. After enduring the same pain over and over every time he slept with another woman, I felt like I had gone numb. I cried because it hurt so much, but there was nothing I could do except wait for them to finish.
The next morning, Mom and Dad greeted me cheerfully for my eighteenth birthday. I couldn't bring myself to feel happy because the pain was still there. As they sang me a birthday song, my vision suddenly went dark.
"Selina!" That was the last thing I heard before darkness completely consumed me.
When I opened my eyes again, I was already in the hospital. I turned to Mom, who was watching over me.
"How are you feeling now?" she asked worriedly. I slowly sat up and leaned against the headrest.
"Adrian is still sleeping with another woman, isn't he? Didn't I already tell you to reject him as your mate, Selina? What are you still waiting for? Are you hoping he'll accept you as his Luna? Wake up! You're going to kill yourself if you keep doing this." Mom shouted angrily at me. I knew she was struggling between me and Ellaine, deciding whose side to take, but Ellaine was her biological daughter, and I was the one who had to step aside so Ellaine could become the Luna of the Shadowfang Pack.
