Chapter 21

MAXWELL’S POV I was looking for Damien when I saw him with Selina. He was holding her by both shoulders as they walked. My jaw tightened as I stared at Damien’s hands on Selina’s shoulders. Why were they together? ‘Why can't you just admit that you already like her? What are you still waiting for?! Let’s just claim her! You i***t,’ Apollo snarled furiously. I walked toward the two of them, and I noticed that Selina’s neck was red, as if someone had strangled her. “What are you guys doing and where did you come from?” I asked them as I approached them. Damien looked for a bench where Selina could sit, and I followed the two of them. “What happened?” I asked. “That Adrian, the future alpha of this pack. I saw him strangling Selina earlier, Adrian’s minions were ganging up on her again.” “What? Where is that bastard? You should’ve taught them a lesson!” I shouted angrily at Damien. He looked at me with furrowed brows, as if he was wondering why I was this angry. Who wouldn't be angry? They hurt my mate! ‘Why don't we just mark her so we'll know what's happening to her! You're so damn annoying,’ Apollo said angrily again, but I ignored him. “Selina, tell me. Were they also the reason why you were unconscious in the forest where we found you?” Damien asked without even answering me. I was also looking at Selina, waiting for her answer. “Let's not talk about that anymore.” “We need to talk about it because your life is at stake here! Are you stupid? Are you just going to let them hurt you and turn you into a punching bag?” I couldn't stop myself from getting angry at her. Damien could only look at me, but I ignored him. Selina was looking at me, there were those innocent eyes of hers again. She looked like she couldn't even hurt an ant. I could only shake my head and sigh at her. Was she really this weak? If I ever found out that they hurt Selina again, I would be the one to deal with them. They had no right to hurt her. ‘Why you? Aren't you hurting her right now? She thinks we don't like her!’ ‘You shut up!’ I snarled at my wolf. ‘You’re the one who should stop! What's so hard about marking her?! Whenever she gets hurt, you act as if you're the one suffering, but you're also one of the reasons she's hurting!’ Apollo was so angry that I could almost feel him trying to force his way out of my body. “Your words are getting too harsh, Maxwell. What's happening to you? Since when did you become interested in a woman?” Damien said with a frown. I only rolled my eyes at him. “What else does she need to hear? I saw how she fought. I saw how her wounds healed immediately. I can feel that she's not an ordinary person. Why doesn't she use her strength to defend herself?” I said irritably. Selina remained calm and stared straight into my eyes. “Do you think fighting them is the solution to make them stop bullying me? If all we do is fight, when will it ever end?” “What do you want to do? Just let them hurt you? Do you think staying silent will make them stop what they're doing to you? No, Selina. You also need to fight back when necessary. He’s the future alpha of this pack, why don't you tell his parents what he's doing to you so they can have that bastard expelled from his own pack! And if that Adrian was involved in trying to kill you in the forest where we found you, are you just going to stay silent? As long as you don't say anything, they won't stop until they kill you! Don't be stupid, Selina!” “Maxwell, enough!” Damien shouted at me. I irritably rubbed my face before messing up my hair. I turned my back on the two of them and took a deep breath. “What’s happening to you? Why are you getting angry at her? I know you're just worried about her, but where is all this frustration coming from?!” Damien added. ‘He’s right! You asshole! Why are you getting angry at our mate? Why don't we just kill the people hurting our mate? Will your anger do anything?!’ I forced myself to calm down. I didn't want to say those words to Selina, but she needed to wake up. They wouldn't stop as long as she did nothing. ‘Then let us be the ones to act. We’ll get revenge for her,’ Apollo whispered. I want to, but this is not the right time. “I'm sorry, I'm already bothering you too much. I'm leaving, you two should go back to your companions.” I turned to face them, and Selina stood up. “Are you going home? I'll take you,” I said gently. She looked at me as if she couldn't believe I was actually going to do that for her. Probably because she's my mate. Stupid. “No, thank you, but I can go home by myself.” My jaw tightened at her rejection of my offer. “Are you really sure you can go home alone? We can take you so we can make sure nothing happens to you before your fight tomorrow,” Damien said, but Selina shook her head. “I don't want trouble. My life will only become more complicated if the students here see me with two future alphas from two different packs.” “So what? They should be afraid because we're ready to protect you from them,” I told her. “It’s not that easy. Maybe they won't do anything to me while you're here, but what happens when you leave and go back to your packs? Don't worry, I'll be fine going home.” She gave us a small smile. “Damien, thank you for saving me earlier. I already owe both of you so much, and I don't know how I'll ever repay you.” “Just stay safe. That's all you need to give us in return,” I answered her. She met my eyes again and smiled at me. I swallowed hard because of that smile. “I’m going home. See you tomorrow.” She walked away from Damien and me. I could only watch her until she disappeared from my sight. I looked at Damien when he tapped my shoulder. “Why do you seem interested in her? Do you like her?” he teased me. I irritably removed his hand from my shoulder before walking away from him. I could still hear his teasing laughter. “This is the first time I've seen you interested in a woman. Did she win you over? Tell me, Maxwell,” he continued. “And how about you? Why are you asking me? Didn't you save her from that Adrian? You even wanted to take her home,” I snarled at him before looking at him as he caught up with me. He only shrugged. “I don't know either. I actually thought she was my mate, but that's not how a mate smells.” I stopped walking because of what he said. He looked at me and stopped as well. “What?” he asked. How many mates was the Moon Goddess going to give her? Was it Damien too? ‘Are you stupid? She never said Selina was his mate. He said he thought Selina was his mate, but her scent was different,’ Apollo said irritably. Why was he getting angry at me? “What do you mean you thought she was your mate?” I asked curiously. He shrugged. “I don't know. There's something different about her scent that I can't explain.” That was all he said before walking ahead of me. “Let's go, they might have been looking for us for a while now,” he muttered. I didn't answer anymore and simply followed him. What was it about that woman?
