Chapter 13

SELINA’S POV

I looked down at the students of Lunaris Royal Academy lined up below. I had no idea what they were doing in front of the palace, but I guessed they were preparing to leave for Shadowfang Pack.

Maxwell had told me that my name was scheduled for the third day, when I would fight the other upcoming first-year college students.

The moment I sensed someone behind me, I quickly turned around. My heart suddenly started beating faster when I saw Maxwell. He was also wearing the Lunaris uniform, and he looked incredibly handsome in it.

“We're leaving now. Get some rest here first, I'll have someone pick you up the day after tomorrow because we won't be able to return until the Mooncrest Trial is over,” he said, even though he didn't have to explain anything to me because I'm just a nobody. My heart felt like it was about to leap out of my chest from how fast it was beating.

I couldn't understand myself anymore, but what I felt for Maxwell was different from what I felt for Damien. Why did the two of them affect me this way?

“Thank you so much, Maxwell. I have nothing to repay you with, but I'm willing to become your servant if that's what it takes to pay back your kindness.”

“You can think about that later, what you need to do now is regain your strength so you can face the people who tried to kill you.” I nodded and smiled at him.

“Please be careful on your journey, Alpha Maxwell,” I said before giving him a respectful bow. I couldn't understand why I kept crossing paths with the future Alphas of different packs.

“Thank you, Selina.” I didn't raise my head until he had already walked away. When I saw that he was gone, I finally stood up straight. I watched him walk farther away. We belonged to different packs, but for some reason, I felt safer with them than anywhere else.

Now I was alone here. I returned to my room and simply sat on the sofa. I hoped the effects of the wolfsbane would completely disappear from my system so I could fight at full strength during the Mooncrest Trial.

I stayed inside my room, reading a book. I wanted to go outside, but I forgot to ask Maxwell if I could train at their training ground.

I also felt embarrassed to meet the Alpha and Luna of Silvermoon Pack. I didn't even know if they were aware that I was staying inside their palace.

I hadn't trained for an entire week. If I suddenly entered a fight, I might lose in the very first round. I stepped out of my room and looked around, hoping to find a maid so I could ask for directions.

I walked downstairs and saw several maids cleaning the lobby. The moment they noticed me, they immediately started whispering among themselves. They were probably wondering who I was and what I was doing inside the Alpha and Luna's palace.

“Do you think she's Alpha Maxwell's mate?” I overheard one of the women whisper.

“I wonder which pack she belongs to. Could she really be our future Luna?” they continued whispering.

After reaching the bottom of the stairs, I approached one of them. She immediately bowed respectfully before me.

“You don't have to bow whenever I'm around. I'm just a nobody. I just wanted to ask where your training ground is,” I asked politely.

“And what exactly are you planning to do at the training ground?” a voice suddenly asked from behind me.

“Good afternoon, Luna Maxzine,” everyone cleaning the living room greeted in unison. I also gave her a slight bow since she appeared to be the Luna of Silvermoon Pack.

“You're the girl Maxwell brought here, aren't you? Which pack do you belong to? Why didn't you leave with them? Isn't the Mooncrest Trial happening now?” she asked one question after another. I immediately became nervous. Just from the tone of her voice, she sounded like the kind of parent who was extremely strict.

“My name is Selina Montecarlos, Luna Maxzine. Thank you for allowing me to stay here and for treating my injuries,” I said humbly before standing up straight. One of her eyebrows slowly arched.

“Who told you that we welcomed your arrival here? Don't you know that my son simply snuck you into this place?”

“I'm sorry, Luna Maxzine. I didn't know you weren't aware that Maxwell brought me here,” I apologized before bowing slightly. Maxwell never told me that his parents had no idea I was here. I wished I hadn't stayed behind.

“Follow me,” she ordered authoritatively before turning around. I quietly followed her, even though my heart had started pounding again. If I couldn't leave until the following day and they threw me out now, I wouldn't have anywhere to sleep tonight or tomorrow.

I silently followed her until we entered an office. I guessed it was her personal office. I remained standing in front of her after she sat down.

“Sit,” she ordered, her voice still as strict as before. I obeyed and sat on the long sofa. I could feel her staring at me while I kept my head lowered, my eyes fixed on the floor.

“Who are you? What are you doing here? Does my son know you? Do you know that he personally searched for the medicinal herb you needed just so your strength could return and your wolf could recover from the wolfsbane? Are the two of you in a relationship? Are you his destined mate?” she asked one question after another.

“My name is Selina Montecarlos, Luna Maxzine. I don't personally know Maxwell, but I've seen him once at Shadowfang Pack School. Maxwell and I don't have a secret relationship, and I'm not his destined mate either. He told me they simply found me unconscious and brought me here,” I answered every one of her questions. One of her eyebrows rose again, as though she didn't believe a single word I had said.

“If you're already well, then what are you still doing here? Why haven't you returned to your own pack? What if my son's destined mate finds out about this? It would hurt her deeply if she learned that Maxwell brought another woman here. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. You know how much it hurts when our mate sleeps with someone else.”

“I understand that, Luna Maxzine. Don't worry because nothing is happening between Maxwell and me. They only helped me. Maxwell told me someone would come to pick me up the day after tomorrow, so if you'll allow me to stay here until then, I'd really appreciate it. I'm telling the truth because there's nothing between Maxwell and me.” Luna Maxzine smirked. There was nothing I could do if she refused to let me stay.

“You're the first woman Maxwell has ever brought into this palace, and I don't want him getting involved with any woman before he meets his destined mate. I hope you're not like the other women who fall for my son. I won't accept any woman into our family unless she's Maxwell's true mate. I'm a woman too, Selina. I don't want my son to break another woman's heart.” Had I judged her the wrong way? She looked strict, but she actually seemed kind.

“You can stay here if you want. I just don't want to find out that something is going on between you and Maxwell. I know my son well, he never brings a woman here unless he's interested in her, that's why I'm wondering why he brought you here if you're not his mate.”

“Maxwell only helped me, Luna Maxzine, and he doesn't have any special feelings for me,” I replied. He only brought me here to save my life, but the Luna seemed convinced that her son liked me. Why would someone like him ever fall for someone like me?

Maxwell was incredibly handsome, tall, well-built, and had a muscular physique. He had no reason to be interested in someone like me. I'm just a wolfless orphan.

“It's better that we've cleared everything up, Selina. As for the training ground you were asking about, you can use it. I'll have someone escort you there.”
