SELINA’S POV
Luna Maxzine had someone escort me to their training ground. They had plenty of equipment I could use for training, but I focused on practicing hand-to-hand combat without any weapons. Using weapons was strictly forbidden while the Mooncrest Trial was ongoing.
If you wanted to shift, you were free to do so, but using weapons against your opponent was prohibited, although sometimes, because people were so desperate to earn a place at Lunaris Royal Academy, they secretly used weapons, or worse, coated them with wolfsbane to weaken their opponents.
By now, Adrian and his friends probably believed I was already dead. A whole week had passed, yet I still hadn't returned home. I knew my parents were worried sick about me, and Ellaine was probably celebrating because I was finally gone.
I still didn't understand where all their hatred came from. Was it because I was adopted by the former Beta? Was it because I had been given a good life? I still couldn't understand it, especially since I had never done anything to make them hate me.
I began training for combat. I imagined an opponent constantly attacking me, and I blocked every strike over and over again. I leaped high into the air, pictured my enemy's head, then threw a kick through the air before landing back on the ground.
I continued training. I kept imagining the faces of the people who had turned my life into hell. Adrian, his friends, Ellaine, and all of her friends. Every single one of them made my life miserable every single day.
“AAAHH!” I shouted as I kicked away a ball that had been thrown at me. Even now, I could still feel the pain Adrian had caused me. He slept with other women just to hurt me as his mate.
I fell to the ground and looked at the man sitting on the bench. He had been staring at me the whole time, and the moment I recognized what he was wearing, I immediately lowered my head. Damn. He was the Alpha of this pack!
“Have you been there all this time? I'm sorry if I disturbed you. I just wanted to train so I could prepare myself before my scheduled fight in the Mooncrest Trial,” I said respectfully. From where he was sitting on the bench, he jumped down and slowly walked toward me.
I couldn't bring myself to meet his eyes because I wasn't even sure I'd leave this place alive. I had never met the Alpha and Luna of the four great packs before. This was also my first time setting foot inside Silvermoon Pack.
“You're the girl Maxwell brought here, aren't you?” he asked seriously, his voice so cold it sounded as if it had come straight from Antarctica.
“Yes, Alpha Alex. I used your training ground so I could prepare myself and survive the Mooncrest Trial. I already asked Luna Maxzine for permission to use it,” I replied respectfully before raising my head so our eyes met. His expression remained serious, and the way he looked at me made it feel as though he could see straight into my soul.
“Who are you? I can sense something unusual about you that I can't explain. It's as if a strange power is surrounding you.” I gave him a faint smile after hearing those words. How could I possibly possess some extraordinary power when the Moon Goddess had denied me a wolf? Every werewolf started shifting at the age of twelve, yet I was already eighteen, and I still didn't know if I would ever have one.
“You're mistaken, Alpha Alex. I'm the adopted daughter of Beta Dante Montecarlos from Shadowfang Pack, and I still don't have a wolf. Everyone hates me except my parents, who truly loved me even though I'm not their real daughter. I'm not powerful like you think I am. I don't even need power, I just wish the Moon Goddess had at least given me a wolf and a peaceful life.” I couldn't stop myself from telling him everything I had been through. His face remained serious, and although he looked strict, I strangely felt at ease around him.
“So you're adopted? You don't know who your real parents are?” he asked curiously, and I shook my head. I wanted to know who my real parents were too. Why did they abandon me? Didn't they want me? Did they already know what kind of fate awaited me, so they simply threw me away? Did they know why I still didn't have a wolf until now?
“Thank you for letting me stay here, Alpha Alex. If it weren't for Maxwell, I don't know if I'd still be alive today. I probably would've never made it back to my parents. Thank you for not sending me away, and thank you for letting your pack healers treat me.” I bowed respectfully to him, but the moment he suddenly moved as if he was about to stab me, I instantly stepped back.
I frowned at him. Was he trying to kill me?
He smirked at me, looking almost pleased that I had dodged his attack.
“You don't have a wolf, yet your instincts are this sharp? Are you really sure, dear?” It was obvious he still didn't believe me. Did he think I was hiding my wolf?
I watched as he pulled a dagger from behind him and threw it at me. I quickly caught the dagger and looked at him. He didn't stop there, he kept throwing one dagger after another from behind his back. I dodged them all with ease, and whenever I couldn't avoid one, I simply caught it.
I couldn't understand why he was doing this. When I thought he had finally run out of daggers, he suddenly charged at me. He was about to strike my neck with the edge of his palm, but I blocked it with both of my hands.
He quickly jumped back before rushing at me again, but before he could reach me, I stepped onto his knee, leaped into the air, and locked both of my arms around his neck. That still wasn't enough because he escaped from my hold just as quickly.
Our hands clashed repeatedly. We kept trying to land a hit on each other, but we blocked every single attack. He grabbed my head, forcing me to face the ground, and the moment I lifted my head, he wrapped both arms around my waist, spun around, hooked both of his legs around my waist, making me lose my balance and fall, then locked both of my arms behind my back while trapping me by the neck.
“Damn,” I muttered under my breath. I couldn't break free anymore because his knee was pressing firmly against my back while both of my arms were restrained.
What chance did I have against an Alpha?
